Discover How One of the Biggest Stars of World Football Transformed a Farm in Portugal into the Largest Agricultural Empire in the Country, Investing Millions in Innovative Cultivation and Revolutionizing the Agricultural Business with Bold Strategies and Future Vision.
Cristiano Ronaldo, besides being one of the greatest icons of world football, is building an empire in agribusiness in Portugal.
His farm, located in Almeirim, is already recognized as the largest agricultural enterprise in the country, resulting from an initial investment that exceeds 50 million euros.
The Portuguese player decided to bet on the production of baby carrots, an unusual product for someone known for his talent on the field, and turned this idea into a billion-dollar business through the company Fresh 52.

Atakarejo went from a fruit stall in Salvador to a R$ 6.3 billion empire: the Bahia-based chain dominates supermarkets in the state, surpasses competitors by a wide margin, and now aims for accelerated expansion with the support of Pátria in the Northeast retail sector.
Fresh 52 not only cultivates the carrots but also processes and markets packaged snacks that are now exported to several countries in Europe.
According to information from the Bahia Agro portal, Cristiano Ronaldo does not intend to stop there: he announced an additional investment of 90 million euros to expand the production capacity of the farm, including the construction of a modern processing unit in Santarém.
“Diversifying is essential. Football is just a part of my empire“, stated the star, showing that his business vision goes far beyond the pitch.
This move is not just a financial investment but also a strategy to boost the local economy, generate jobs, and innovate in the Portuguese agricultural sector.
A Project That Faced Challenges and Attracted Investors
The start of the baby carrot planting was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which had a significant impact on the production chain and the global economy.
Despite the delay, the project managed to attract international investors, including economic groups from Los Angeles, United States.
The support of AICEP (Agency for Investment and External Trade of Portugal) was fundamental in boosting the business, creating about 180 jobs since the start of operations.
Fresh 52 was founded in August 2016 and involves not only Cristiano Ronaldo’s direct participation but also businessman Luís Miguel Grosso Correia, who plays an important role in negotiations and company expansion.
Luís Miguel was key in closing commercial agreements with Polaris, a company that promotes Portuguese tourism in China, according to the newspaper O Almeirinense.
This combination of football, agribusiness, and tourism shows an integrated strategy to put Portugal in global prominence in different sectors.

The Agribusiness in Brazil and the Difficulties in Consolidating the Market
While Cristiano Ronaldo builds his agricultural empire in Portugal, Brazil faces challenges in consolidating its agricultural input retail.
According to executive and agribusiness specialist Schneider Lavoro, the Brazilian market in the sector is going through a “bubble” that is bursting, mainly due to problems in distribution of products.
“When giants try to dominate the agro in Brazil, they fail“, Lavoro asserts, emphasizing that the theory of centralization and logistics optimization does not work against the regional and cultural complexity of the country.
He explains that the Brazilian agribusiness is very fragmented, with over 20,000 points of sale of inputs, while the United States, for example, has about five thousand.
This fragmentation makes the Brazilian market harder to control, as farmers maintain a close and trusting relationship with their local suppliers.
More than just digitalizing processes, Lavoro states that it is essential to understand the behavior of rural producers, who prefer personal contact and direct relationships, even if that means giving up the convenience of online purchasing.
This cultural characteristic makes it difficult to consolidate and scale retail operations in the sector, causing companies that bet on centralization to face losses and failures.

Cristiano Ronaldo and the Future of Agribusiness in Portugal
The success of Cristiano Ronaldo’s investment shows that agribusiness can be a promising area for athletes and entrepreneurs looking to diversify their businesses and invest in strategic sectors for the economy.
Besides driving the local economy, Fresh 52’s project serves as a model for other European countries, which are starting to view the countryside as a space for innovation and sustainable growth.
The choice for a plantation specialized in baby carrots, a differentiated product with added value, highlights a market strategy that combines quality, sustainability, and export.
Portugal, which is not traditionally recognized for its agricultural scale compared to giants like Brazil and the United States, is now gaining prominence with significant investments, including international interest in expanding the country’s presence in the agricultural sector.
