German Multinational Creates Futuristic Electric Bicycle Inspired by Model Released to Market in 1865

In 1865, the German multinational BASF was founded and became one of the pioneers in the chemical products field. The multinational chose to mark one of its anniversaries with the launch of an electric bicycle never seen before. The model was named Concept 1865 and is inspired by an old bicycle launched in the year of its foundation.

The Concept 1865 electric bicycle received this name in reference to the year when inventor Karl Drais added pedals to the first “penny-farthing”, which are those retro bicycles that have a much larger front wheel than the rear wheel.

BASF was inspired by “penny-farthing” models and, as a result, created a version of the electric bicycle that is practical and updated for today’s and the future’s market. The cyclist sits on a detachable saddle that is positioned practically on top of the front wheel, to which the pedals are connected.

The Concept 1865 electric bicycle comes equipped with a 250-watt motor that is embedded within the hub of the rear wheel. In the European Union, the maximum allowed speed for e-bikes is 25 kilometers per hour (km/h).

Except for the metal axles, motor, and brakes, according to BASF, the electric bicycle was built with high-performance polymers and specialized foams made in-house. The model was designed in collaboration with the design studio DING3000.

The goal was to demonstrate the wide range of applications of BASF’s revolutionary polymers, such as their use in tires. They are produced with Infinergy, a type of expanded thermoplastic polyurethane, making them lighter and more puncture-resistant.

Concept 1865 Electric Bicycle Features Built-In Suspension System in the Seat for Greater Comfort to the User

The saddle is made of polyurethane foam and has a built-in spring so that the cyclist can pedal more comfortably. The removable battery is stored in the seat; the manufacturer did not provide information about range and charging.

The Concept 1865 is not a new release, as the first appearance of this model was back in 2013 during the 148th anniversary of the German multinational. It was also showcased at a fair in 2015, but after that, not much information was released about the project’s outcome.

The e-bike was described by the manufacturer as a connection between the past and the future. BASF released a video showcasing the electric bicycle on its channel; check it out:
