The Traffic and Transportation Directorate (DTT) of Criciúma, in the south of Santa Catarina, will resume the inspection of motorcycles with open exhausts, an alteration considered irregular by traffic regulations for modifying the original characteristics of the vehicle.
Inspections are scheduled to begin on Wednesday (18) and, depending on the situation found, may result in the retention or seizure of the motorcycle.
According to information released by the municipal agency, the measure is part of a schedule of operations that is expected to extend throughout the year.
The proposal is to intensify control over vehicles with altered exhaust systems, a frequent target of complaints forwarded to the public administration.
Inspection Against Irregular Exhausts in Criciúma
The focus of the checkpoints will be the verification of motorcycles with open exhausts, a practice that increases the level of sound emitted.
According to the DTT, the action aims to reduce noise pollution and ensure compliance with the rules set forth in the Brazilian Traffic Code.
The resumption of operations occurs during a period of increased urban flow, marked by the return to classes and the normalization of commercial and service activities.
According to the agency, the greater circulation of vehicles increases the need for preventive inspection.
Checkpoints in Different Neighborhoods Throughout the Year
Furthermore, the DTT stated that the checkpoints will not be restricted to a single point in the city.
The planning provides for actions in different neighborhoods and at varied times, a strategy adopted to expand the reach of the actions.
The Traffic Superintendency informs that the initiative addresses requests made by residents.
In previous statements released by the city hall, superintendent Edno Dutra stated that the inspection has both an educational and punitive character, aiming to guide drivers and curb irregularities.
Agents’ Actions and How the Inspections Work
It is expected that about 18 agents of traffic will participate in the operations planned for 2026.
The teams are expected to operate in strategically defined points based on internal criteria of the department.
During the inspection, the agents will verify the conditions of the vehicle and the required documentation.
If irregular exhaust is found, the driver may be given a deadline for regularization, according to information from the DTT.
When Can the Motorcycle Be Seized
The seizure does not occur automatically merely due to the alteration in the exhaust.
According to what was reported by the agency, the vehicle may be removed if there is another infraction that prevents its release on-site.
In such cases, in addition to the requirement for regularization, the motorcycle may be taken to the impound lot until the outstanding issues are resolved.
The decision depends on the analysis made by the agents at the time of inspection.
Inspection Also Includes School Vans and Taxis
In addition to motorcycles, the DTT reported that the operations will also include school vans and taxis.
The goal is to check the compliance of vehicles that provide services to the public, within the competences of the municipal traffic agency.
The inspection of these segments involves checking documentation, vehicle conditions, and compliance with specific requirements for each category.
Complaints About Noise and Impact on the Population
According to the traffic superintendent, previous operations received positive feedback from part of the population.
Among the groups that register the most complaints about noise are the elderly, insomniacs, children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and health professionals, according to reports received by the municipality.
The municipal administration maintains that the continuation of the checkpoints seeks to reduce the recurrence of irregularities and reinforce compliance with circulation norms.
