The duplication of BR-470 is one of the oldest and most awaited infrastructure projects in Santa Catarina. Discussed for over two decades, the highway has finally reached 85% completion, with a good portion of the sections duplicated and open to traffic.
Nevertheless, the daily reality is still harsh for those who depend on the road. The duplication of BR-470 remains unfinished, with critical bottlenecks, ongoing construction, and frequent traffic jams, especially in urban sections and access routes to Blumenau and Indaial.

What Is Still Needed to Complete the Duplication of BR-470
Despite the progress, the duplication of BR-470 still needs to overcome its most complex sections. There are 11 km left to duplicate, concentrated mainly between Blumenau and Indaial, a region considered the biggest bottleneck of the highway.
Additionally, seven viaducts still need to be completed, including strategic works in urban accesses that currently experience queues, delays, and traffic conflicts.
Removal of the Gas Network Delayed Work
One of the main factors for the recent delays in the duplication of BR-470 was the need for removal and relocation of the natural gas network in some sections. Contractual issues and the bankruptcy of a company responsible for the service directly impacted the schedule.
Part of this issue has already been resolved, but about three kilometers remain where the relocation needs to be completed, which prevents the full progress of construction fronts.
Traffic Remains Chaotic at Construction Sites
Even with 85% completed, those who travel daily on the duplication of BR-470 still face long queues, traffic alternating between stop-and-go, and constant delays. In some viaducts under construction, drivers report intense congestion even outside peak hours.
Frustration grows when there are few or no visible workers in certain sections, reinforcing the feeling that the project could advance more quickly.
Government Promises Total Delivery in 2026
The federal government states that the duplication of BR-470 will be fully completed in 2026, ending a saga that has crossed different administrations. The promise includes the delivery of the remaining kilometers and the seven viaducts still pending.
The statement rekindles hope among residents, business owners, and truck drivers, but also generates skepticism, considering the history of missed deadlines over the past decades.
Strategic Importance for Santa Catarina
The duplication of BR-470 is vital for the state’s economy. The highway connects the coast to the Itajaí Valley and the western region of Santa Catarina, being fundamental for cargo transport, tourism, and daily commuting for thousands of people.

Já viste a situação da BR 285 que liga o Oeste do RS (em São Borja) com a 101 em SC? Passa por Ijuí, Carazinho, Passo Fundo, Vacaria e possui conexão com a 470 em Lagoa Vermelha. É trecho de cargas pesadas e está entre as piores estradas que já dirigi facilmente. Muito fácil de furar um pneu, arrebentar uma bucha de amortecedor e entortar a roda.
