Eletrobras Estimates That With the Launch of the Second Voluntary Dismissal Plan (PDC), the Number of Employees Laid Off in 2019 Will Reach 3,868
Based on the dismissal model of Petrobras, which launched its third program of the year last month, Eletrobras has just launched its new Voluntary Dismissal Plan (PDC) this Friday (10/11). The state-owned company intends to lay off up to 1,681 employees by the end of the year.
The plan was agreed upon with the union and is part of the collective agreement signed yesterday at the Superior Labor Court (TST).
This is the second PDC of the year, as in January, Eletrobras announced a dismissal plan with a target of 2,187 layoffs.

The estimate is for a cost reduction of R$ 548 million and savings of R$ 510 million per year, and the plan will also be launched simultaneously in its subsidiaries, such as Companhia de Geração Térmica de Energia Elétrica (CGTEE), Companhia Hidro Elétrica do São Francisco (Chesf), Eletrobras Termonuclear (Eletronuclear), Centrais Elétricas do Norte do Brasil (Eletronorte), Amazonas Geração e Transmissão de Energia (Amazonas GT), Eletrosul Centrais Elétricas (Eletrosul), and Furnas Centrais Elétricas (Furnas).
The agreement with the union also involves further layoffs next year, but on a smaller scale, as the number of employees of the company starting in January 2020 will be 12,500 effective and 12,088 starting in May 2020.
The Company’s Statement
Eletrobras stated in a note, “The mentioned initiative is very important for aligning our companies’ costs to those of a reference company in the electric sector.”
Employees of Furnas who join the PDC will receive compensation in addition to 40% of the balance for termination purposes of the FGTS and prior notice.
The Reuters agency reported that this termination compensation will be valued at a minimum of R$ 75,000 and a maximum of R$ 700,000.
The cost-cutting at Eletrobras sounds to the market like preparation for the privatization of the company, although congressional approval is necessary for that.
