Recently, rumors have emerged that Elon Musk is developing an electric supersonic jet, promising to revolutionize aviation and destabilize giants like Boeing and Airbus. However, the reality is more complex than it appears. While the entrepreneur’s track record, which includes innovative projects like SpaceX, Tesla, and Starlink, inspires confidence, the much-anticipated electric supersonic jet is still just an idea, according to the channel Aviões e Músicas.
History of Elon Musk’s Statements
Since 2012, Musk has mentioned the possibility of creating an electric supersonic jet. In 2018, during an interview on Joe Rogan’s podcast, he suggested the idea of an aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing capabilities, as well as supersonic flight. However, he emphasized that, at the moment, the priority would be advancing energy transition and projects like solar power.
Even in 2021, Musk stated on Twitter that he wanted to create something like this in the future, but the project was not part of his immediate plans, due to the heavy workload with other ventures, such as launching the Cybertruck and developing the Starship rocket.

The Challenges of an Electric Supersonic Aircraft
Elon Musk is known for pushing boundaries, but creating an electric supersonic jet requires overcoming significant technical obstacles:
Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL)
Aircraft with this capability are extremely rare. Models like the Harrier and the F-35 are successful but limited. The biggest issue is the additional weight of specific engines for vertical takeoff, which reduces range and efficiency.
Battery Weight
Compared to traditional fuel, batteries are heavier, posing a significant challenge in aviation. Additionally, in emergencies, batteries cannot be jettisoned, as is the case with liquid fuels, creating weight limitations.
Sonic Boom
The sound barrier generates intense noise, known as a “sonic boom,” which limits the use of supersonic aircraft over populated areas. This issue was one of the reasons for the end of the Concorde, and any new aircraft will need to overcome this obstacle.
Lack of Redundancy
Aviation requires redundant systems for emergencies. An electric plane must ensure safety even with failures in its batteries, something that has not yet been achieved.
Uncertain but Promising Future
Although the project is surrounded by challenges, Musk’s track record indicates that if he decides to proceed, innovative solutions may arise. Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink have already broken paradigms in their sectors. Even so, the entrepreneur emphasizes that the transition to sustainable energy is more urgent than investing in supersonic aircraft at this time.
