China has intensified its diplomatic efforts in defense of free trade this Tuesday (9), calling for the United Kingdom and the European Union to take a united stance against the rising tariffs imposed by the United States. This movement comes amid the threat of new trade barriers, particularly in the electric vehicles and technology sectors, according to Info Money.

In phone conversations with European officials, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the need to preserve the multilateral trading system.
With British Secretary David Lammy, Wang stated that China and the United Kingdom share the responsibility to “resist rampant unilateral bullying.”

In another contact, with the Austrian Foreign Minister, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Wang reiterated that China hopes to strengthen ties with the European Union and keep the doors of international trade open.
Reaction to the Advance of American Protectionism
The new Chinese diplomatic offensive is a direct response to signals that the United States is set to increase tariffs on Chinese products. China seeks to prevent trading partners from adopting similar measures and aims to consolidate its image as a defender of the international economic order.
In addition to bilateral contacts, Wang Yi indicated that China is willing to expand dialogue with the European Union, with the aim of strengthening economic and institutional cooperation between the parties.
