Preference for fewer taxes reaches 50% in Datafolha, while 44% advocate higher taxation to receive health and education from the State.

Half of Brazilians prefer to reduce tax payments and hire private health and education services, according to a Datafolha survey released last Friday (3). The preference for fewer taxes reached 50% of respondents, while 44% chose to pay more taxes to receive these services for free from the State.

According to g1, the result represents a change compared to 2022, when the two alternatives were technically tied. In the previous survey, 46% advocated paying fewer taxes and resorting to private services, compared to 48% in favor of higher taxation accompanied by public provision.

The new survey interviewed 2,004 voters aged 16 and over, distributed across 139 municipalities. The interviews were conducted on June 17 and 18, with a margin of error of two percentage points and a confidence level of 95%.

Preference for fewer taxes grows compared to 2022

The comparison between the two editions shows that the option for a lower tax burden advanced by four percentage points. At the same time, the portion in favor of paying more taxes to finance public services fell from 48% to 44%.

Comparison of results

  • Fewer taxes and hiring private services
    • 2022: 46%;
    • 2026: 50%.
  • More taxes and receiving public services
    • 2022: 48%;
    • 2026: 44%.

In 2022, the two-point difference placed the positions in a technical tie. In the current survey, the gap between them reached six percentage points. The question is part of the ideological matrix developed by Datafolha and is part of the economic axis of the survey.

Preference for fewer taxes reaches 50% in Datafolha, while 44% advocate for higher taxation to receive health and education from the State.

Question measures the view on the economic role of the State

The institute uses the question to monitor how Brazilians evaluate the participation of the public power in the economy and service provision. The choice between paying fewer taxes and directly contracting health and education or contributing more to receive these services from the State is analyzed alongside other indicators.

The set includes opinions on:

  • government’s role in the economy;
  • granting of public benefits;
  • labor legislation;
  • investments;
  • state assistance to companies;
  • responsibilities attributed to the State.

Datafolha emphasizes, however, that the response to this question cannot be used in isolation to define the political ideology of each respondent.

Preference for fewer taxes reaches 56% among men

The division of data by gender revealed different behaviors between men and women.

Among male respondents, 56% chose to pay fewer taxes and hire private services. Another 39% declared a preference for a higher tax burden accompanied by state-provided health and education.

In the female group, the most chosen alternative was the opposite. Half of the women, or 50%, advocate paying more taxes to receive public services, while 44% prefer lower taxation and the use of the private network.

Result among men

  • 56% prefer fewer taxes and private services;
  • 39% prefer more taxes and public services.

Result among women

  • 44% prefer fewer taxes and private services;
  • 50% prefer more taxes and public services.

The numbers indicate a 12-point difference between men and women in the preference for fewer taxes.

Evangelicals and Catholics show different results

The survey also separated responses according to the religion declared by participants. Among evangelicals, 56% chose to pay fewer taxes and hire private services. The alternative of increasing taxation to fund public health and education received 37%.

In the Catholic group, both positions reached the same proportion: 47% for each alternative.

Opinion of evangelicals

  • 56% support fewer taxes;
  • 37% support more taxes to fund state services.

Opinion of Catholics

  • 47% prefer fewer taxes;
  • 47% prefer more taxes and public services.

While the preference for fewer taxes appears with a 19-point advantage among evangelicals, the result among Catholics remains equally divided.

Survey heard more than 2,000 voters

Datafolha conducted the interviews in person in different regions of the country.

Methodological information

  • Interviewed: 2,004 voters;
  • Minimum age: 16 years;
  • Surveyed municipalities: 139;
  • Interview dates: June 17 and 18;
  • Margin of error: two percentage points;
  • Confidence level: 95%;
  • TSE registration: BR-09956/2026.

The survey was registered with the Superior Electoral Court because it also includes sections related to voting intentions for the Presidency.

Overall result shows division on taxes and services

Although the option in favor of a lower tax burden achieved the highest overall proportion, the data shows that opinions vary according to the analyzed profile.

In the national result, 50% choose to pay less taxes and hire private health and education, while 44% support higher taxation in exchange for these services being provided by the State. According to Datafolha, these numbers make up just one of the dimensions used to study the economic views of Brazilians and do not solely define the ideological position of the respondents.
