Embraer and the Brazilian Air Force Join Forces to Develop an Armed Version of the C-390 Millennium, Aiming to Strengthen Maritime Patrol and Defense in the South Atlantic in Light of Increased Threats, Such as Illegal Fishing, That Compromise Regional Security and Ecosystems.
Embraer, in collaboration with the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), is in the process of developing an armed version of the C-390 Millennium, intended for maritime patrol missions. This initiative arises as a response to the need to replace the P-3 AM Orion and P-95M aircraft, which are expected to become obsolete within a decade. The new variant of the C-390 Millennium aims to meet the growing challenges of surveillance and security in the South Atlantic.
The initiative also coincides with Embraer’s analysis of a maritime patrol version based on its 190 E2 aircraft, reflecting the urgency to modernize Brazil’s arsenal in the face of emerging maritime threats. The concern is particularly acute in South America, where Argentina and Uruguay face challenges with the presence of illegal fishing vessels, many of which, subsidized by the Chinese government, engage in predatory fishing, impacting the regional economy and environment.
Partnership Between Embraer and the Brazilian Air Force
The development of the armed C-390 for maritime patrol is part of a broader strategy by the FAB to ensure that Brazil is prepared to defend its waters against illegal activities and preserve its natural resources. This effort reflects Brazil’s determination to maintain a robust state policy for aerial and maritime defense, crucial for protecting its sovereign interests in the South Atlantic.

After 16 years and almost 600 prototypes, a Chinese inventor unveils the world’s smallest and cheapest manned jet, at just 3.80 meters long and costing US$7.2 thousand in materials.
The project to adapt the C-390 for maritime patrol is not only a response to the imminent obsolescence of previous models but also a long-term vision of the FAB and Embraer to ensure Brazilian sovereignty in the South Atlantic. The region has become a stage for increasing tensions, particularly due to illegal fishing activities, which, in addition to harming ecological balance, threaten the rights and maritime resources of South American countries.
About the C-390 Millennium
The C-390 Millennium, developed by Embraer, is an advanced military cargo aircraft designed to replace older aircraft, such as the C-130 Hercules. With significant cargo capacity, the C-390 can transport heavy military equipment, vehicles, troops, and perform medical evacuations. Its features include cutting-edge technology for operations in adverse conditions and unpaved runways, making it highly versatile and efficient in military air transport missions.
In addition to its transport capabilities, the C-390 Millennium stands out for its in-flight refueling ability, acting both as a receiver and as a supplier, which extends its operational range. The aircraft is part of Embraer’s strategy to establish a strong position in the global defense market, already attracting interest from international air forces due to its efficiency, performance, and ability to meet a wide range of military and humanitarian mission needs.
