Growth of hybrids gains new chapter in Brazil with BYD’s advance over the Corolla in retail, in a move that reinforces the strength of Chinese brands and expands the dispute in the electrified mid-size sedan segment.
For the first time, the BYD King finished a month ahead of the Toyota Corolla in Brazilian retail sales and took the lead among mid-size sedans in April 2026, according to data attributed to Fenabrave, the entity that represents vehicle distribution in the country.
Throughout the month, the Chinese sedan registered 1,365 units sold, while the Corolla closed the period with 1,327 registrations, in a tight dispute that ended with a lead of just 38 cars for BYD.
Even small, the difference ended a sequence of Toyota’s dominance in one of the most traditional segments of the national market and reinforced the advance of electrified models in the country.

The dispute also reinforces the advance of electrified vehicles in Brazil, especially plug-in hybrids, a category in which BYD has expanded its presence with competitive prices, strong technological appeal, and an expanding commercial network.
BYD King leads sales among mid-size sedans
The leadership achieved by the King occurred almost two years after the sedan’s debut in Brazil, in June 2024, a period in which the model began to directly compete with the Corolla.
Since then, the model has directly competed with the Corolla, a historical benchmark among mid-size sedans sold in the country.
Although the April result put the Chinese car ahead in retail, Toyota’s sedan still maintains a comfortable lead in the accumulated total for 2026.
In the first four months of the year, Toyota totals 8,857 units, while BYD appears with 4,662 units.
The retail segment is relevant because it considers direct sales to the final consumer, without the weight of large corporate or fleet purchases.
In this type of survey, the preference of individual buyers usually appears more clearly.
Furthermore, the narrow difference shows that the change does not represent a definitive annual leadership replacement, but indicates unprecedented pressure on the Corolla in a territory where the Japanese model has always had consistent performance.
Dispute between Corolla and BYD concentrates market
The commercial strength of BYD King and Toyota Corolla significantly reduced the space for other competitors in April, concentrating a large part of the segment’s sales.
Combined, BYD King and Toyota Corolla accounted for more than two-thirds of mid-size sedan retail sales that month.
Behind them, the Honda City appeared with 575 units, followed by the BMW 320i, with 242.
Next came Mercedes-Benz C-Class, with 115 units, Volkswagen Jetta, with 114, BYD Seal, with 72, Ford Mustang, with 48, Audi A3, with 46, and Nissan Sentra, with 43.
The concentration helps explain the scale of the dispute between King and Corolla.
While other models operate in different price ranges, proposals, or volumes, the two leaders began to directly compete for the customer seeking a mid-size sedan focused on efficiency.
In BYD’s case, the plug-in hybrid package has become one of the main commercial arguments.
The Corolla, on the other hand, preserves its brand strength, reputation for reliability, and flex-hybrid offering, elements that sustain its accumulated leadership.
Gradual growth drives BYD’s advance
The performance recorded in April was a consequence of gradual growth since the model’s arrival in the Brazilian market.
In its first year in Brazil, the BYD King accumulated 4,938 units in its first six months of sales, still in a consolidation phase in the national market.
In 2025, the Chinese sedan advanced and closed the year as BYD’s fifth best-selling car in Brazil.
It also finished as the second best-selling mid-size sedan in the country, behind only the Corolla, with 12,410 units registered.
This volume represented a monthly average of just over 1,000 units.
The April 2026 result, therefore, was above the average pace recorded in the previous year and confirmed the model’s commercial traction in retail.
Meanwhile, BYD also gained strength on other fronts of the Brazilian market.
The Chinese brand expanded its share among electrified vehicles and began to compete for prominent positions in the national retail market with traditional manufacturers.
Hybrid engine and versions of the BYD King
In the Brazilian market, the BYD King is currently offered in two main versions, maintaining the strategy of directly competing for space with traditional mid-size sedans.
The GL configuration starts at R$ 172,990, while the GS version is priced at R$ 175,990, according to values disclosed in consulted market databases.
The most important difference between the versions lies in the battery pack.
The GL option uses an 8.3 kWh battery, while the GS receives an 18.3 kWh battery, which extends the electric range and reinforces the plug-in hybrid proposition.
The sedan combines a 1.5 naturally aspirated engine with an electric powertrain.
In the 2026 lineup, the combustion engine now delivers up to 98 hp, down from 110 hp previously, in compliance with Proconve’s L8 phase, a Brazilian vehicle emissions control program.
The combustion engine’s torque was also reduced, from 13.5 kgfm to 12.5 kgfm.
Despite this, BYD maintained the declared combined power of the hybrid powertrain: 209 hp in the GL version and 235 hp in the GS version.
As the electric motor had no changes reported by the manufacturer, the loss in the combustion engine did not alter the final combined power figures.
However, the total system torque is not officially disclosed by the brand in Brazil.
Corolla maintains leadership in the accumulated sales of 2026
Despite the King’s retail victory in April, the Corolla continues to lead the mid-size sedan segment in accumulated sales for 2026.
The advantage of over 4,000 units over its Chinese rival shows that the annual leadership is still far from changing.
The punctual overtaking, however, holds symbolic weight for the market.
For years, the Corolla has been one of Toyota’s strongest cars in Brazil and is often associated with the stability of the mid-size sedan segment.
For BYD, the result reinforces the acceptance of a strategy based on electrification, competitive pricing, and equipment offerings.
The Chinese brand found in the King a direct alternative to the Japanese sedan, without relying solely on SUVs or compact electric models.
The advance also occurs at a time of greater presence of hybrid and electric cars on Brazilian streets.
Local incentives, the pursuit of lower consumption, and greater consumer familiarity with new technologies help explain this gradual change.
The dispute between King and Corolla is expected to remain one of the main benchmarks in the segment in the coming months.
For now, April 2026 marked the first time the Chinese sedan surpassed its Japanese rival in Brazilian retail.
