Beneficiaries of the fee waiver, public school students, and participants in social programs must complete a mandatory step to take the main higher education entrance exam

Thousands of Brazilian students who obtained the fee waiver for the National High School Exam (Enem) 2026 still need to complete a crucial step to participate in the tests. Although they received the fee waiver benefit, these candidates must confirm their registration in the official system by June 5, 2026.

The information was released by the Social Communication Advisory of the National Institute for Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep), responsible for organizing the exam. According to the agency, the approval of the waiver does not automatically guarantee participation in the tests, making it mandatory to confirm registration within the established deadline.

Furthermore, the rule also applies to other groups covered by specific benefits related to the exam.

Fee waiver does not guarantee automatic registration for Enem 2026

Many students believe that obtaining the fee waiver means being automatically registered for Enem.

However, the notice that regulated the waiver requests already anticipated the need for an additional step.

Therefore, all candidates granted the fee waiver must access the official exam system and complete the registration process by June 5, 2026.

If this confirmation is not made within the deadline, the participant may be unable to take the tests.

Additionally, the same procedure applies to candidates who participated in Enem 2025, received a fee waiver, and missed both test days but had their absence justification accepted by Inep.

In this case, even with the approved justification, participation in the 2026 edition depends on registration confirmation.

Who is entitled to the Enem fee waiver

The fee waiver benefit primarily serves students in economic vulnerability situations.

Among those covered are participants registered in the Federal Government’s Social Programs Registry (CadÚnico).

This system is used to identify and characterize low-income Brazilian families.

Additionally, candidates belonging to families with a per capita income of up to one and a half minimum wages also receive exemption.

The aim of the measure is to expand access to the exam and reduce financial barriers for students who wish to enter higher education.

Consequently, millions of Brazilians can participate in the Enem without having to bear the registration costs.

Public school students were automatically enrolled for the first time

Public school students prepare to participate in Enem 2026.
High school graduates also need to confirm participation.

One of the main novelties of Enem 2026 involves high school graduates in public schools.

For the first time, this group was automatically enrolled in the exam system.

However, despite this ease, students still need to access the official platform to confirm participation.

This step remains mandatory.

Furthermore, the confirmation allows the participant to provide important data for the exam.

Among them are the municipality where they wish to take the exam, the choice of foreign language, and the need for specialized assistance.

Therefore, even automatically registered students should pay attention to the final deadline.

Choice of language and specialized assistance depend on confirmation

By accessing the system to complete the registration, the participant can provide various preferences related to the exam.

One of them is the choice of the foreign language exam.

Candidates can choose between English or Spanish.

Additionally, those who require specialized assistance must also register this need during the process.

This information is essential for Inep to organize all the necessary structure to accommodate students with different conditions and specific needs.

Consequently, failing to confirm registration may prevent not only participation in the exam but also access to accessibility resources provided by the organization.

Participants of Pé-de-Meia also need to confirm registration

Another group that should pay attention to the deadline consists of students benefiting from the Pé-de-Meia program, an initiative created by the Ministry of Education (MEC).

Even those covered by the program need to complete the registration confirmation within the period established by the notice.

Therefore, the benefit does not replace the need to access the Enem platform and validate participation.

According to Inep, the rule applies to all candidates, regardless of how they obtained the exemption.

Enem continues to be the main gateway to universities

Over more than two decades, Enem has consolidated its position as the main mechanism for access to Brazilian higher education.

Currently, millions of students use the scores obtained in the exam to compete for places in public and private universities.

In addition, the results are used in important federal programs.

Among them are the Unified Selection System (Sisu), the University for All Program (Prouni), and the Student Financing Fund (Fies).

These initiatives significantly expand the opportunities for entry into undergraduate courses across the country.

For this reason, missing the registration confirmation deadline may represent the loss of an important academic opportunity.

Private universities and international institutions also use the score

The reach of Enem goes beyond federal programs.

Several private higher education institutions use the exam score as a selection criterion.

In some cases, performance in Enem serves as the sole entry requirement.

In others, it acts as a complement to their own selection processes.

Furthermore, the results obtained by Brazilian students can be used in higher education institutions in Portugal.

This happens thanks to agreements signed between Portuguese universities and Inep.

These agreements facilitate access to the scores of participants interested in pursuing undergraduate studies abroad.

Consequently, the exam has become an important tool not only for those who wish to study in Brazil but also for those who dream of an international experience.

Deadline ends on June 5 and requires candidates’ attention

With the registration closing scheduled for June 5, 2026, experts recommend that students do not leave the confirmation for the last days.

Furthermore, completing the procedure in advance reduces the risk of technical problems, system congestion, or registration errors.

Inep emphasizes that the registration will only be considered complete after the participant confirms the data.

Therefore, candidates who received a fee waiver, had an absence justification accepted, participate in the Pé-de-Meia program, or were automatically registered by the public network need to access the Participant’s Page and finalize the process.

In this way, they will ensure the right to participate in Enem 2026 and compete for opportunities in Brazilian and Portuguese universities in upcoming selection processes.

Do you believe that automatic registration for public school students facilitates access to Enem or are there still barriers that need to be overcome?
