Bahia Led Nationally, With Over 30%, The Generation of Energy From Wind and Solar Photovoltaic Sources
The Bahia led nationally, with over 30%, the generation of renewable energy from wind (31.8%) and solar photovoltaic (33.7%) sources in 2019. The wind source in the State grew by more than 50% and the photovoltaic by more than 70% compared to 2018.

“The numbers are very clear. Bahia is a leader in the renewable sector in the country. In addition to contributing to the diversification of the energy matrix, the sector has boosted economic and social development in the interior, especially in the semi-arid region, where most of the parks are established. Land leasing, economic movement, jobs, social projects, and increased city revenue are some of the benefits,” says João Leão, Deputy Governor and Secretary of Economic Development of the State.

The world has bet on green hydrogen as the fuel of the future, but now faces the side effect: producing 1 kilogram requires about 9 liters of ultrapure water, and the largest projects on the planet are precisely in the driest regions of the Earth, where water is already scarce for people.

Renewable Energy: Wind Energy
From January to November 2019, 15,152 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) were generated, energy capable of supplying 126 million residences/year, benefiting 378 million inhabitants/year – equivalent to 27 times the Bahian population, which currently corresponds to 14.8 million inhabitants, according to the IBGE estimate from last year. Bahia has 165 wind farms in operation, with an installed capacity of 4GW and more than 1,340 wind turbines.
Renewable Energy: Solar Energy
Just like the winds, the excellent levels of solar radiation have made Bahia stand out with the utilization of natural resources. There are 29 photovoltaic parks in operation, with 777 Megawatts (MW) of installed capacity and more than 3 million photovoltaic modules, where R$ 3.8 billion has already been invested in the municipalities of Barreiras, Bom Jesus da Lapa, Casa Nova, Guanambi, Itaguaçu da Bahia, Juazeiro, and Tabocas do Brejo Velho. More than 10,000 direct jobs were generated during the construction phase of the parks that are already in operation.
