According to Data from Absolar, Photovoltaic Solar Energy Exceeds 8 Gigawatts of Power, Generating Over 200 Thousand Jobs and Attracting More Than R$ 40 Billion in Investments
ABSOLAR – Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy, reported that Brazil’s photovoltaic solar energy generation capacity has surpassed 8 GW, generated over 240 thousand jobs, and attracted investments of more than 40 billion reais. The data also showed that this energy source supplied around 514 thousand consumer units in Brazil. The survey considered large plants and small to medium-sized systems installed on land, facades, and roofs.
Solar Energy Generation
Large-scale solar plants have become the seventh largest source of energy generation in Brazil. There are nine states in Brazil with these projects: Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Tocantins, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Bahia, Ceará, Piauí, and Pernambuco.
In terms of total installed capacity for centralized and distributed energy generation, photovoltaic solar energy ranks sixth in Brazil’s energy matrix, falling behind only natural gas, wind, hydroelectric, biomass, and thermal plants powered by diesel and other fossil fuels. It surpasses thermoelectric and nuclear plants.

Brazilian scientists are simultaneously advancing two research projects on clean hydrogen and driving solutions that could transform the energy matrix, enhance industrial competitiveness, and accelerate large-scale emission reduction targets.
-
Advancement in renewable energy: A R$ 150 million project launched by Petrobras and Finep aims to create state-of-the-art electrolyzers for green hydrogen, strengthening national research and preparing Brazil to compete in a billion-dollar energy market.

Illiterate or semi-literate grandmothers were trained to repair solar systems, open rural workshops, and light up homes that still depended on kerosene.

The world has bet on green hydrogen as the fuel of the future, but now faces the side effect: producing 1 kilogram requires about 9 liters of ultrapure water, and the largest projects on the planet are precisely in the driest regions of the Earth, where water is already scarce for people.
In terms of the number of installed systems, residential users hold a leading position, representing 73.6% of the total, followed by companies in the commerce and services sectors (16.6%), rural consumers (7.0%), industry (2.4%), public institutions (0.4%), and other sectors such as services (0.03%) and public lighting (0.01%).
Jobs and Investments in the Solar Energy Sector
The Absolar research numbers also show that, since 2012, the photovoltaic solar energy sector has generated over 240 thousand jobs and invested more than 40 billion reais. The accumulated investment in large-scale solar plants exceeds 16 billion reais.
With 4.9 GW of installed photovoltaic generation capacity, the distributed generation sector represents the accumulated investment of more than 24 billion reais across five regions of the country since 2012.
