Engie Completes Modernization of Salto Osório Hydroelectric Power Plant in Paraná with Investment of R$ 300 Million and Increase of 25.67 MW in Capacity.
Engie completed, in May 2025, one of the largest energy infrastructure modernization projects in the south of the country: the upgrade of the Salto Osório hydroelectric power plant, located in the municipality of São Jorge d’Oeste, Paraná.
After six years of construction and an investment of R$ 300 million, the plant’s installed capacity increased from 1,078 MW to 1,103 MW — a gain of 25.67 MW — which represents a significant expansion in clean energy generation and supply security for the national electricity system.
Greater Efficiency and Production with the Same Volume of Water
The modernization of the Salto Osório hydroelectric power plant, under Engie’s responsibility, brought significant operational gains.
-
Illiterate or semi-literate grandmothers were trained to repair solar systems, open rural workshops, and light up homes that still depended on kerosene.
-
The world has bet on green hydrogen as the fuel of the future, but now faces the side effect: producing 1 kilogram requires about 9 liters of ultrapure water, and the largest projects on the planet are precisely in the driest regions of the Earth, where water is already scarce for people.
-
Africa has about 500,000 cell towers and most still burn diesel to operate, while companies rush to cover antennas with solar energy and avoid signal blackouts.
-
Farmers swapped diesel for solar panels in Pakistan, powered irrigation pumps almost cost-free, expanded rice fields, and now groundwater has become a red alert in the countryside.
Two of the six generating units were completely renovated, with the replacement of turbines and stators, resulting in higher energy efficiency.
According to the plant manager, Dirceu Rafanhin, these new units are capable of producing more energy using the same volume of water, which increased efficiency and directly contributed to the increase of the plant’s physical guarantee.
In addition, fundamental systems such as speed regulation, excitation, electrical protection, and monitoring also underwent technological updates, both in the modernized units and in the other four.
Pandemic Impacted Engie’s Construction Schedule
The interventions began in February 2019, but the schedule was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which required operational and sanitary adaptations.

Still, the completion within the first half of 2025 demonstrates Engie’s commitment to deadlines and to strengthening Brazil’s renewable energy matrix.
History and Strategic Importance of the Plant
In operation since 1975, the Salto Osório hydroelectric power plant had already undergone a previous modernization cycle between 2005 and 2007.
Now, with its concession valid until 2031, the plant consolidates itself as one of the most relevant for the supply in the Southern region.
With the increase of energy commercialization capacity by 9.8 MW average, the unit reinforces Engie’s position as a leader in clean and renewable energy in the country.
