The Equinor Bacalhau Field Project, in Which Schlumberger is Involved
The development will include 19 trees as well as associated subsea equipment, including subsea wellheads, subsea controls, and connection systems, and a complete workover riser. The SURF scope includes rigid risers, flowlines, and umbilicals.
The team from Subsea Integration Alliance, composed of Subsea 7 and OneSubsea, a Schlumberger company, established during the front-end engineering design phase, will now transition to the complete EPCI phase. Project management and detailed engineering in the field operated by Equinor will take place in Rio de Janeiro. Offshore construction activities will begin in 2022 using Subsea 7’s light construction, flex-lay, and reel-lay vessels.

The Development of the Bacalhau Field
Donnie Ross, President of Production Systems at Schlumberger, states that this contract reflects the company’s commitment to enhancing the performance of Equinor’s Bacalhau Field through an open collaboration approach, integrating and applying innovative subsea technology solutions based on Schlumberger’s expertise in high pressure and deep water. The President of Production Systems at Schlumberger also notes that it will have a positive impact on the regional economy by creating value in Brazil.
Stuart Fitzgerald, CEO of Subsea Integration Alliance LLC, mentioned that they have been working closely with Equinor since the FEED award in 2020, and in this EPCI phase, they will support Equinor in maximizing the potential of the Bacalhau Field through the Subsea Integration Alliance’s leading portfolio of technologies and services, and a ‘one team’ approach to project delivery.
The Bacalhau Field: Located 185 km off the coast of Ilha Bela municipality in São Paulo state, it has a water depth of 2,050 meters. The Bacalhau Field, in the Santos Basin, is Brazil’s first Integrated SPS and SURF project. The award is a significant endorsement of Subsea Integration Alliance’s strong position, which is part of Schlumberger, in the integrated market and its long-standing local presence in Brazil.

The oil companies Equinor, ExxonMobil, and Petrogal Brasil announced that they will proceed with the development of the oil discovery at the Bacalhau Field in the Santos Basin, with investments of around US$ 8 billion. The first oil from the field, which will be operated by the Norwegian Equinor, is expected in 2024, and production is projected to reach 220,000 barrels per day, the companies stated in a joint release.
In 2012, the oil company Equinor bought the oil asset from Petrobras (located in the pre-salt polygon) for most of the project – discoveries of Carcará and Guanxuma – present in the concession contract BM-S-8. Subsequently, the extension of the field in the Carcará Norte area was contracted under the sharing regime.
