The Norwegian Oil Company Equinor and China’s Sinochem Received Preliminary License from Ibama for Phase 2 of the Expansion of the Peregrino Oil Field Production System in Campos Basin – RJ.
On Friday, July 5th, Ibama issued the preliminary license for phase 2 of the production system of the Peregrino field, operated by Equinor in the deep waters of the Campos Basin. The installation of the third fixed platform is expected to increase the field’s production by 270 million recoverable barrels.
The project includes the installation of a third fixed platform for drilling new wells, with an increase in the field’s output of about 270 million barrels in recoverable reserves, Ibama added.

A section of a gas pipeline is also planned to supply gas to the project for energy generation, reducing diesel consumption and atmospheric emissions, according to Ibama.
Equinor is the operator of the Peregrino field, holding 60%, while Sinochem holds 40%. The development of phase 2 of the field has an estimated investment of US$ 3.5 billion, with production expected to start by the end of 2020, according to information from the Norwegian company’s website.
The asset is the largest field operated by Equinor outside Europe, with a production capacity of 100,000 barrels per day (bpd), according to the company.
Equinor Aims to Introduce Gas into the National Market
The Norwegian company is considering installing an FPSO for gas and condensate production in the area of exploration block BM-C-33, where the Pão de Açúcar discovery is located, in the deep waters of the Campos Basin. The company’s initial studies indicate a production unit capable of producing between 16 and 20 million m³/day of natural gas, with 8 to 12 risers. First gas production could start, depending on other factors, from 2026.
The company is also licensing two FPSO units to produce oil and gas in Carcará, in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin. The first production unit, with a capacity of 220,000 barrels per day of oil and 15 million m³/day of natural gas, will be the largest in the country and is expected to start operations in July 2024.
