When trying to withdraw 200 Australian dollars, he encountered a strange message on the ATM: “balance not available at this moment.” He tried transferring the amount from his checking account to his savings account, but the machine errored again and returned the card. Determined to try his luck, Saunders attempted to withdraw the amount directly from savings… and it worked. To his surprise, the ATM dispensed the cash without deducting from the balance.
Intrigued, he tested the flaw again that same night. After a few attempts, he realized that between one and three in the morning, the ATMs were disconnected from the bank. In the following months, Saunders exploited the computer error at the bank to withdraw over 1.6 million Australian dollars (equivalent to about R$ 6 million). With this “created from nothing” fortune, he began to live like a millionaire: throwing lavish parties, financing trips on private jets, and even paying for his friends’ college tuition.
But the lavish life also came with a psychological price. The waiter began to experience panic attacks and even thought the police would raid his house at any moment. “It was very addictive to know that with just the push of a button you could increase your balance by millions,” revealed Saunders in an interview.
After four months of ostentation, he decided to turn himself in to the bank and confessed to the flaw. However, the bank merely said: “Now you are in the hands of the police.” Curiously, nothing happened for two years until Saunders decided to tell his story to the media.
Arrest and Return to Simple Life
After making the case public, Saunders was arrested and sentenced to one year in prison, followed by 18 months of community service. During the trial, it became clear that no one – not even the judges and prosecutors – understood exactly how he had used the computer error at the bank to access the infinite money.
After serving his sentence, the former millionaire returned to work as a waiter, earning 22 dollars per hour. Regarding his regret, he commented: “There definitely was a hangover moment when I thought, wow, maybe I should have really gone to Spain.”
The Legacy of the Infinite Money Case
Dan Saunders’ story is a mix of luck, cleverness, and heavy consequences. Despite the less glamorous ending, the Australian proved that even the banking system has its flaws – and sometimes, those flaws can transform an ordinary waiter into a millionaire for a few months.
