A Huge 90-Degree Curve in a $2.4 Million Bridge Sparks Outrage in India. Government Suspends Seven Engineers and Punishes Companies Involved in Controversial Bridge Construction
A newly inaugurated bridge in Bhopal, Central India, has come under fire and investigation after the discovery of a serious structural flaw: a nearly 90-degree bend in the main route.
The structure, estimated at around US$ 2.3 million (200 million rupees), was designed to improve urban mobility but had the opposite effect.
Dangerous Curve Becomes National Scandal
The case gained traction on Indian social media after images of the bridge were shared along with criticism regarding the safety of the construction.

The first street in Brazil is almost 400 meters long, 477 years old, has had eight different names, and holds secrets of Salvador that few know; discover Chile Street.
The curve, deemed highly unsuitable for the expected heavy traffic, raised concerns about the technical decisions made during the project’s execution.
With the controversy escalating, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Mohan Yadav, ordered the immediate suspension of seven engineers, including two chief engineers. An inquiry has also been launched to investigate the actions of a retired sub-engineer.
Those Responsible for the Bridge Construction Have Been Punished
In addition to the suspensions, the state government blacklisted both the construction company and the project consultant responsible for the work, accusing them of presenting a structurally flawed design.
The chief engineer VD Verma, who supervised the work, claimed that the curve was a necessary measure given the space constraints and the presence of a nearby metro station.
In light of the problem, Bhopal authorities are considering acquiring new land, which would allow for redesigning the bridge with a gentler and safer curve.
The bridge, spanning 648 meters, aimed to reduce delays at railway crossings and shorten the daily commute for up to 300,000 people.
For now, the project has become a symbol of failures in urban planning and engineering in the region.
