The government of Sรฃo Paulo launches a program to expand the railway network by one thousand kilometers, with an investment of R$194 billion.
The government of Sรฃo Paulo launches a program to expand the railway network by one thousand kilometers, with an investment of R$194 billion.

The government announces a program that foresees the expansion of the state's railway network by 194 kilometers. With an estimated investment of R$150 billion, the project includes intercity trains, light rail, urban trains and the subway, aiming to improve urban and interurban mobility and generate around XNUMX jobs.

Imagine a Sรฃo Paulo connected by modern trains, fast and more sustainable travel. This is the ambitious goal of the Sรฃo Paulo government with the โ€œSP on the Railsโ€ program, launched in 2024.

With colossal investments and a promise to significantly improve urban and interurban mobility, the project aims to expand the state's railway network by a thousand kilometers.

The plan includes more than 40 initiatives, such as intercity trains (ICTs), light rail vehicles (LRVs), metro and urban trains.

Governor Tarcรญsio de Freitas, a defender of the railway model, believes that Sรฃo Paulo will be a protagonist in this transformation.

โ€œThe highways are increasingly congested, we need a sustainable solution that is in line with what the world is doing. We are going to revive the railway in the state of Sรฃo Paulo and get the people of Sรฃo Paulo back on the train,โ€ said the governor.

Billion-dollar investments and jobs in Sรฃo Paulo

According to the state government, the railway expansion will have an estimated cost of $ 194 billion, covering projects in Greater Sรฃo Paulo, the interior and coast.

In addition to improving public transportation, the program should generate around 150 thousand direct and indirect jobs, a relief for the local economy and an incentive for economic recovery.

TIC Eixo Norte: the fastest in Brazil

Among the most outstanding projects is the ICT North Axis, which will connect Sรฃo Paulo to Campinas with an investment of $ 14,2 billion.

The route, auctioned in February 2024, will start at the Palmeiras-Barra Funda station and end at a new railway terminal in Campinas, with a stop in Jundiaรญ.

With operation scheduled for May of 2031, the express service promises to significantly reduce travel time, which will be just 64 minutes.

The train will have the capacity to transport up to 860 passengers per trip, reaching speeds of up to 140 km/h, becoming the fastest rail transport in Brazil.

ICT West Axis: connection with Sorocaba

Another outstanding project is the ICT West Axis, which will connect the capital of Sรฃo Paulo to Sorocaba in just 60 minutes. Currently, the road journey takes around 1h50 by car and 2h10 by bus.

With an investment of $ 10 billion, this railway line will have 100 kilometers long and will be made possible through a public-private partnership (PPP).

ICT East Axis and ICT South Axis: more studies in progress

Still in the study phase, the ICT East Axis e ICT South Axis They also promise to benefit millions of people from Sรฃo Paulo.

The East Axis will connect Sรฃo Paulo to Sรฃo Josรฉ dos Campos, with an extension that varies from 80 to 130 kilometers, traveled in 75 minutes.

The TIC Eixo Sul will connect the capital to Baixada Santista, serving 1,8 million people. The route, also between 80 and 130 kilometers, will last approximately 90 minutes. These two projects together add up to estimated investments of $ 25 billion.

The impact of railway expansion

With the promise of relieving highway congestion, the โ€œSP on Tracksโ€ bets on a sustainable and efficient solution. Reducing pollutant emissions and encouraging public transport are some of the expected benefits.

Experts also point out that investment in railways is fundamental for the economic development of peripheral regions and the decentralization of economic activities in the state.

Challenges ahead to Sao Paulo

Despite the optimism, the project faces significant challenges, such as environmental licensing issues, expropriations and the need to attract private investment to make the works viable.

Will the government be able to overcome these barriers and deliver what was promised on time?

Do you think this railway expansion will be enough to solve Sรฃo Paulo's transportation problems or will it just be another political promise? Leave your opinion in the comments!

The news about investment in the railway sector is wonderful. However, the first sentence of the article's headline already discourages us from continuing to read. Forget about buses?! Only if it is a call for cars, the worst of all worlds. There is no efficient mobility without modal integration. And there is no capillarity without road transport. Lastly, there is no train station within immediate reach of every citizen.
