Range is one of the main factors that drives potential buyers away from electric cars. A new battery developed by the British start-up Nyobolt promises to revolutionize the electric vehicle market by drastically reducing charging time.
In a recent test, the Nyobolt battery demonstrated the ability to charge from 10% to 80% in just four minutes and 37 seconds. The demonstration, conducted in a concept sports car, was a significant milestone in automotive electrification and highlighted the possibility of a future where charging an electric car takes as long as refueling a combustion vehicle.

Fastest Charging in History
The innovation from Nyobolt is significant as it directly addresses drivers’ concerns about “range anxiety” — the fear of running out of battery in the middle of a trip, without charging stations nearby.

With the promise of reducing charging times to less than five minutes, something akin to the time it takes to fill up a traditional car’s tank, electric vehicles become much more appealing to the public.
Although the advancement is remarkable, it is important to remember that range anxiety is not caused solely by charging time, but also by the availability of charging infrastructure.
Currently, even the fastest options, like Tesla’s superchargers, take between 15 and 20 minutes to charge a battery to 80%. Compared to this, the Nyobolt battery is a tempting promise of convenience and efficiency.
Dr. Sai Shivareddy, co-founder of Nyobolt, emphasized that this test was a “major milestone for electrification.” However, the path to this achievement was not easy.
The demonstration faced technical difficulties, such as a failure in the cooling system of the concept car during a heatwave in the UK, showing that there are challenges to overcome before this technology is available to the general public.

Infrastructure: The Next Obstacle
Despite advancements in charging time, the major obstacle to the mass adoption of electric vehicles remains infrastructure. For Nyobolt’s technology to be widely used, super fast 350 kW DC chargers will be necessary.
However, these chargers are still not common. While they are available in some areas of the UK, most drivers still rely on slower chargers, which limits the short-term impact of this new technology.
Paul Shearing, a professor of Sustainable Energy Engineering at the University of Oxford, emphasized the importance of a robust and accessible charging network. According to him, “developing technology that allows people to charge faster, similar to the time it takes to refuel a traditional car, is really important.” However, he highlighted that without adequate charging infrastructure, even the best battery innovations will not be enough to transform the market.
Charging Electric Cars in the Future
Nyobolt’s new battery represents a significant advancement in terms of charging time, but there are still doubts about the viability of this technology in higher density batteries, such as those used by Tesla. In the test, the concept car achieved a range of 120 miles after the quick charge.
In comparison, a Tesla charged to 80% offers up to 200 miles of range. This raises the question: can ultrafast charging technology be effectively applied to higher range vehicles?
Additionally, the limited deployment of ultrafast chargers remains a significant barrier. Although Nyobolt has demonstrated that it is possible to charge a battery in less than five minutes, most drivers will still face longer charging times, regardless of the battery they are using.
