This Tuesday (31), Governor Jorginho Mello delivered the environmental license that talks about the expansion of the dock of the port managed by Portonave, located in the city of Navegantes.
Being the second largest handler of containers in Brazil and still the leader in the South region, the port is now preparing to receive even larger ships. According to the company, the investment will be R$ 1 billion for the period from 2023 to 2025.
The main objective is to prepare the Terminal for receiving ships of about 400 meters in length. Currently, it can accommodate ships up to 350 meters long and approximately 48 wide.
The governor emphasized the importance of the Port for the economy of Santa Catarina. “This is a new moment for us to help the port sector. The State must be a facilitator and, with that, the company generates more jobs, more revenue, and, of course, complies with environmental requirements,” highlighted Governor Jorginho Mello.

This project had its Installation Environmental License (LAI) released for the other dock works in July 2021, but there was a new request in July 2022 due to changes in the projects and alterations in the execution methodology of the plan. This new license allows the continuation of works according to the changes made.
Sheila Meirelles, the president of the Institute of the Environment, pointed out that all stages were complied with. “The license certifies the compliance with environmental requirements so that Portonave can proceed with the project for the execution of the dock works, essential for modernizing the berthing facilities of the port terminal, and also represents another step for our state towards social, economic, and sustainable development,” highlighted the president of IMA.
Waiver of Environmental License
According to Osmari de Castilho Ribas, the administrative executive director of Portonave, the licensing granted by IMA will ensure the continuity of the work, which is still very important for the city of Navegantes and for the economy of Santa Catarina.
With all preparations starting in the second half of 2023, these works will be carried out in two phases, on the east and west sides of the dock. This forecast is expected to create 500 new job openings over the next three years.
The project has a duration of 38 and a half months, with an initial period of nine months for mobilizations, projects, and preliminary works, plus the other 27 months for dock construction and an additional two final months for delivery and closing of the project. Throughout this period, all operations will be maintained with adjustments to the berthing facilities to accommodate other vessels.
