This Tuesday, 24, in Florianópolis, there was a large meeting with leaders of the agribusiness and representatives of the productive sector and producers. The Environment Agency, the Secretary of State for Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development, and the State Attorney General joined forces to support the rural producers of Lages-SC.
Initially, the rural producers of Coxilha Rica, in Lages, had their properties seized in Operation Araxa by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama). Thus, 9 farmers are prohibited from producing in native grassland areas. Therefore, according to Ibama, these areas are part of the Atlantic Forest, which means they cannot be exploited, even if authorized by the State and Federal Forest Codes.
The Secretary of State for Agriculture, Valdir Colatto, emphasizes: ” We need to resolve this issue because there is a huge social and economic impact on the productive sector of Santa Catarina, as the native grassland areas extend through the Serra Catarinense and the Mid-West, in addition to the high-altitude fields.
We hope for a dialogue with Ibama, a negotiation, to resolve this impasse and bring peace so that farmers can continue producing, which is very important for Santa Catarina and also for Brazil.”

Thiago Cordeiro, Secretary of Agriculture and Fisheries of Lages, explained that Operation Araxá is the second phase of the campereada operation and began in November 2018, shortly after Ibama punished farmers from Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, and Paraná for environmental crimes.
Thus, producers who want to plant in native grassland areas need environmental authorization. Thiago also states: ” This is a problem that has been dragging on since 2018 and needs to be resolved. For this, the State Government and rural producers need to unite to ensure compliance with state law. Together we want to suspend these fines and ensure that producers can return to producing safely”
To conclude, Secretary of Agriculture Valdir Colatto reinforced: ” The Brazilian Forest Code determines that it is up to the Union to define general standards and the State to establish its specific legislation. We want to respect the specific characteristics of Santa Catarina so that we can develop our agricultural activity, respecting environmental concerns and making sustainable development possible.”
Finally, during the meeting it was agreed that the Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of the State of Santa Catarina would be the spokesperson for the producers of the State to ensure government involvement in solving the problem.
