State Decree Recognizes Prolonged Drought, Activates Emergency Measures, Mobilizes Technical Agencies, and Expands Investments to Reduce Impacts on Reservoirs, Water Distribution, and Supply to Affected Rural Areas
The government of Pernambuco declared a state of emergency in 107 municipalities on this Wednesday (31), due to lack of rainfall, to mitigate impacts on water supply, valid for 180 days starting from January 4.
Decree Expands Response to Drought in the State of Pernambuco
The measure was formalized through decree 60,112, signed by Governor Raquel Lyra, aimed at reducing the effects of hydrological drought on reservoirs and distribution.
The current decree follows an action taken in January of this year, when 117 municipalities were also included in a similar situation, due to worsening climatic conditions.

According to Apac, extreme drought has advanced in the far west of the state, while mild drought has intensified in the Agreste region, especially near the border with Alagoas.
This situation has worsened the prolonged drought, putting pressure on supply systems and demanding emergency actions to prevent water supply collapses.
Recent Investments and Emergency Actions
Since 2023, the government has expanded the delivery of simplified supply systems and recovered desalinizers, serving rural families and vulnerable urban areas.
In total, 23 systems have already been delivered, according to the government, as part of the strategy to reduce dependence on traditional sources compromised by drought.
In 2025, Compesa intensified investments in structural works and emergency actions, reaching about 100 municipalities throughout the year.
These interventions resulted in the completion of approximately 117 works, with investments of around R$ 650 million, strengthening the state’s water capacity.
The current measures complement previous initiatives and keep the state on alert, as climatic challenges and rainfall irregularity persist in Pernambuco.
