The Federal Government Announced That It Plans to Increase, Still in 2025, the Mixture of Anhydrous Ethanol in Gasoline to 30%, Officially Creating E30. Currently, the Fuel Sold at Gas Stations Contains 27% Ethanol.
According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), this change could reduce the price of gasoline by up to R$ 0.13 per liter. In addition, the new percentage promises to strengthen domestic production of biofuels and reduce dependence on gasoline imports.
E30 Can Lower Prices and Contain Inflation
Minister Alexandre Silveira stated that the adoption of E30 could contain prices and control inflation. According to him, the new fuel will directly contribute to making the country independent from external purchases of fossil derivatives.
In 2024, Brazil imported about 760 million liters of gasoline. With the adoption of the new mixture, the country will stop importing and may even export the surplus, while the demand for ethanol is expected to grow by 1.5 billion liters per year.

Additionally, Silveira emphasized that E30 represents a milestone in the national energy transition. As he stated: “We will free ourselves from the constraints of international parity prices. The price of gasoline will be that of internal competitiveness. This is a reduction in inflation.”
Technical Tests Confirm Viability
The Mauá Institute of Technology (IMT) conducted tests with E30 to verify the technical viability of the mixture. The research evaluated driveability, performance, and emissions, using 16 vehicles and 13 motorcycles under different conditions with both gasoline and ethanol.
The results confirmed that E30 does not significantly alter the performance of vehicles. Thus, drivers will not notice changes in driveability.
On the other hand, the study identified starting difficulties in cold conditions in some motorcycles, especially in environments with lower temperatures. However, IMT technicians stated that these limitations do not compromise the adoption of the new fuel.
According to technician Luana Camargo, who participated in the presentation of results, “the differences found in the tests are not obstacles for the adoption of E30.”
E30 Can Reach 35% in the Future
Although the new limit is 30%, Brazilian legislation allows for the mixture of ethanol in gasoline to reach up to 35%, provided there is technical confirmation.
Therefore, if the results of E30 are confirmed in practice, the government may consider raising the proportion even further in the coming years.
Silveira also highlighted that the country is taking advantage of the expansion of corn ethanol production, which is growing rapidly. This way, Brazil ensures internal supply even during periods of lower supplies of sugarcane ethanol.
The measure is part of the Fuel of the Future program, which aims to accelerate the energy transition in the transportation sector with cleaner and more sustainable fuels.
