Chinese Author of the Silk Road Study is Coming to Maranhão for International Symposium
The Sousândrade Foundation, in partnership with the Secretary of Economic Development and Strategic Programs (SEDEPE), is holding the International Symposium “The Potential of Maranhão in the New Silk Road of China: Business and Development Opportunities for Brazil” from July 11 to 13 in São Luís. The event aims to provide strategic information about the project and offer a view of the range of economic development opportunities that arise for Brazil with the inclusion of the Maranhão capital in the New Silk Road of China.
The opening of the Symposium will take place this Monday (07.11) at 9 AM at the Palácio dos Leões. On Tuesday (07.12), there will be an agenda focused on the Maritime Logistics sector at the Port of Itaqui headquarters. And on Wednesday (07.13), the event will continue with a lecture on the Railway Logistics sector at the FIEMA headquarters.
One of the formulators of the Silk Road Expansion is Professor Paul Lee, PhD, from Zhejiang University (China), who will come to Maranhão as a guest of the State Government for a broad discussion about what the inclusion of the capital in the Silk Road could really represent.

Since 2013, China has been executing the BRI (Belt & Road Initiatives) Plan, an international cooperation proposal aimed at establishing a gigantic global investment program involving countries from all continents, which make up about one-third of the world’s economy. According to research from Fudan University (Shanghai-China), the New Silk Road has already invested 59.5 billion dollars, or approximately 315 billion reais, in 2021 in the infrastructure of countries. The Chinese investment plan encompasses 65 countries, covering approximately 62% of the population and 30% of global GDP.
São Luís do Maranhão is highlighted in the study Strategic Locations for Logistics Distribution Centers Along the Belt & Road, conducted in 2022 by the world’s most renowned experts. The Maranhão capital has extraordinary conditions to receive such a project due to its road, rail connections, and exceptional port conditions. The connection made by the North-South Railway, the main cargo transport axis in Brazil, linking railway networks from the five regions of the country, is one example. In the region called the North Arc, meaning above latitude 16, no state has similar logistics transport conditions.
According to the Secretary of Economic Development, José Reinaldo Tavares, the inclusion of São Luís in the largest economic expansion program in the world, that of China, will ensure substantial resources for infrastructure, distribution centers for goods, and privileged access for export to other countries included in the project.
“In addition to strengthening this fundamental partnership with China, Professor Lee’s visit will provide us with essential information for an unprecedented phase of socioeconomic development for Maranhão and, of course, to prepare for it,” explains the former governor.
