There Was a 7.2% Increase in Movements in the First Half of 2020 at the Port of Rio de Janeiro. Numbers Above Expectations Despite Economic Recession

3.747 million tons, that was the mark reached by the Port of Rio de Janeiro, according to the Rio de Janeiro Port Authority (CDRJ) in a report released to the press this Monday (20). A record of 250 thousand tons was registered, an increase of 7.2% compared to the first half of 2019. It is worth noting that the Port is celebrating its 110th anniversary today.

Movements of Pig Iron and Wheat Contributed to This Record at the Port

According to the report, pig iron achieved an export volume of 867 thousand tons, representing a growth of 54.5% over the first half of 2019.

Wheat also stood out in these numbers, as the Wheat Terminal of Rio de Janeiro (TTRJ), incorporated into the Port, started operations this year and handled about 204 thousand tons of the grain.

The President of CDRJ, Francisco Antonio de Magalhães Laranjeira, emphasizes that, “even with the economic impacts caused by the pandemic, the Port of Rio de Janeiro managed to present a positive result in the first half of 2020”. And the outlook is good, according to him: “In the cargo movement projection for the second half of 2020, we expect to maintain the good performance observed in the first half of the year”.

The Coronavirus Restricted, but Did Not Interrupt Operations at the Port of Rio de Janeiro

The Superintendencies of Port Management, Environmental Management, and Port Authority joined efforts at the beginning of the restrictions caused by the coronavirus. In addition to CDRJ and the tenant companies, the Labor Management Body (OGMO) took the same care with the dockworkers (TPAs) assigned to the complex.
