A Natural Phenomenon Transforms Siriú Beach, In Garopaba, Into A Scenario That Reminds Of The Lençóis Maranhenses. Giant Dunes, Natural Sweet Water Pools And Adventure On The Santa Catarina Coast Explain Why The Destination Has Turned Into A Frenzy Among Tourists.

Those who think they need to go to the Northeast to see white dunes cut by crystal-clear lagoons might be surprised. In the South of Brazil, more precisely on the coast of Santa Catarina, a natural phenomenon has been transforming Siriú Beach, in Garopaba, into a kind of “discreet sister” of the famous Lençóis Maranhenses. During certain times of the year, the scenery changes completely and starts attracting tourists in search of nature, adventure, and that view that seems to be straight out of a postcard.

The nickname is not an exaggeration. During the rainiest times, the dunes in the region collect sweet water between their elevations, forming true natural pools amidst the clear sand. The contrast between the blue of the lagoons, the white of the dunes, and the green surroundings creates a rare spectacle in the South of the country.

Siriú Beach: A Natural Treasure In Garopaba

Located just a few minutes from downtown Garopaba, Siriú Beach was already known for its clean seawater, strong waves, and impressive dunes. According to information from the Garopaba City Hall, available on the official tourism portal of the municipality, the area is one of the most preserved in the region precisely because it is inserted in a context of environmental protection and sustainable land use.

What many people still don’t know is that these dunes can reach up to 40 meters in height. When rain appears more intensely, the water accumulates and gives rise to temporary sweet water lagoons, very similar to those found in the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Maranhão.

This phenomenon directly depends on the rainfall regime and the relief of the sand. That is, it does not happen all year round, which makes the experience even more special for those who manage to visit the place at the right time.

Why Does The Beach On The Santa Catarina Coast Resemble The Lençóis Maranhenses So Much?

The comparison with the Lençóis Maranhenses is not just aesthetic. In both cases, the process is similar: large fields of dunes with lower areas end up functioning as natural reservoirs, accumulating rainwater. The result is shallow lagoons, with clear water and pleasant temperature, perfect for a quick dip.

According to the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), this type of formation is relatively rare and depends on a delicate balance between climate, wind, and relief. In the case of Siriú Beach, proximity to the sea and the dune dynamics create a unique environment in the southern Brazilian coast.

Even though they do not have the same extent as the Maranhão park, these natural pools in Santa Catarina enchant precisely because they arise spontaneously and temporarily, surprising even those who already know the region.

The Experience Of Tourists Among Dunes And Lagoons

Those who visit Siriú Beach at this time find much more than a simple sea bath. The sweet water lagoons become a meeting point for tourists and locals, especially on sunny days. It is common to see families, couples, and groups of friends enjoying the natural pools to cool off, relax, or simply contemplate the landscape.

In addition, the high dunes turn the place into one of the main sandboarding spots in Santa Catarina. The practice is quite popular and attracts adventurers from various parts of Brazil. For those who prefer something more peaceful, walking along the dunes and watching the sunset is also among the favorite activities.

The sea in the region, in turn, usually has stronger waves, which keeps Siriú Beach on the radar of experienced surfers. This combination of calm lagoons and a wild ocean makes the destination appealing to different profiles of visitors.

Lagoa Do Macacu: An Alternative For Those Seeking Peace

Not everyone wants adrenaline. With this in mind, Garopaba offers calmer options nearby. A good example is Lagoa do Macacu, located further south on the Santa Catarina coast. The place is highly sought after by those who prefer contact with nature without great thrills.

The infrastructure around the lagoon stands out. There is an offer for kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals, allowing for calm exploration of the area. The water tends to be calmer, ideal for those traveling with children or simply wanting to relax away from the strong sea waves.

According to local guides and information shared on specialized tourism portals, Lagoa do Macacu also stands out for its environmental preservation and more tranquil atmosphere, being a good alternative to balance adventure and relaxation in the same trip.

The International Recognition Of The Lençóis Maranhenses

While the “twin” in Santa Catarina draws attention in the South, the Lençóis Maranhenses have gained even more prominence on the global stage. In August of this year, the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park officially received the title of World Heritage Site granted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The recognition reinforces the environmental importance of the area, which occupies about 156,000 hectares on the Maranhão coast and houses one of the planet’s most unique ecosystems. The decision places the park alongside other significant world natural heritage sites and increases Brazil’s responsibility in conserving the space.

Regarding this milestone, ICMBio President Mauro Pires highlighted:
“Conservation units play a fundamental and crucial role on the planet, safeguarding unique natural wealth, protecting biodiversity, and decisively contributing to carbon capture from the atmosphere.”

Conservation And Tourism Go Hand In Hand

Sustainable tourism experts point out that both the Lençóis Maranhenses and areas like Siriú Beach show how nature can be an ally of local development, as long as there is planning and environmental respect.

According to studies released by the Ministry of Tourism and by institutions linked to conservation, destinations based on natural phenomena tend to attract tourists interested in authentic experiences, which strengthens regional economies without necessarily requiring large constructions or interventions.

In the case of Garopaba, the appreciation of the dunes, natural pools, and lagoons reinforces the municipality’s identity as a destination for ecotourism and adventure on the Santa Catarina coast.

Is It Worth Visiting This “Sheet” Of The South?

For those who cannot travel to the Northeast or wish to explore new scenarios in Brazil, Siriú Beach emerges as a surprising alternative. The view resembles the Lençóis Maranhenses, but with its own characteristics, a different climate, and an equally memorable experience.

The secret is to plan the trip according to the rainy season and keep an eye on local information to increase the chances of finding the formed lagoons. When this happens, the outing gains a special charm and yields photos and memories that are hard to forget.
