Networks in Rio Grande do Sul Change Traditional Work Hours to Face Labor Shortage. 5×2 Shift Offers Consecutive Days Off and Seeks to Reduce Turnover in Retail While Maintaining the Weekly Workload Provided for in the CLT.
The networks Comercial Zaffari, from Passo Fundo, and Quero-Quero have begun adopting the 5×2 shift in units in Rio Grande do Sul to try to reduce the difficulty of hiring and retaining employees.
The change breaks with the 6×1 model, predominant in commerce, and seeks to offer consecutive days off without altering the load of 44 weekly hours, as provided for in the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT).
The information was confirmed by the Federation of Employees in the Commerce of Goods and Services (Fecosul) and by the Union of Retail Workers of Lajeado, in the Vale do Taquari.

Shift Change to Attract Workers
Comercial Zaffari, owner of Stok Center and the second-largest supermarket chain in the State, has begun adopting the 5×2 shift during the hiring process for the branch opened in June in Lajeado.
According to the president of the local Retail Workers Union, Marco Daniel Rockenbach, the decision came from the company itself after alerts that the 6×1 format, with work on Sundays and salaries close to the minimum wage, would not attract interested candidates.
In the region, commerce competes for labor with the industrial sector, which tends to offer higher wages and time off on weekends.
According to the union, this competition has led retail companies to rethink schedules and shifts to increase the number of applicants.
Consecutive Days Off as a Differential
The offer of two consecutive days off, whether on the weekend or during the week, has been pointed out by labor unions as one of the factors that most attracts new workers.
Rockenbach states that there is a labor shortage in the local commerce and cites industries in segments such as Poultry and confectionery as the main competitors for the same professionals.
According to the leader, the union guided the company to offer additional benefits, such as rotating days off, including Saturdays, in addition to salary adjustments above the minimum wage, to increase interest in the job openings.
High Turnover Pressures the Sector
Data from the Gaúcha Association of Supermarkets (Agas) indicates a turnover rate exceeding 60% in companies in the sector.
Many employees leave their jobs soon after the probation period.
According to the Lajeado union, switching jobs for small salary differences is common.
Representatives of the category also observe that younger workers have shown resistance to working on Saturdays and Sundays, prioritizing shifts with greater predictability.
For the president of Agas, Lindonor Peruzzo Junior, the adoption of 5×2 “is a strategy defined by each company in light of difficulties in hiring and retaining employees,” in addition to being a way to compete with local industries.
Pilot Project at Quero-Quero
The Quero-Quero network began testing the new work schedule format in two stores in Lajeado, on a pilot basis, after reaching an agreement with the union, due to changes in previous working conditions.
Unlike Stok Center — where the model was applied at the time of hiring — the company established a collective agreement for the adjustment.
According to the union, there will be rotation among employees, with days off distributed throughout the week, ensuring at least one double day off monthly.
The measure aims to allow workers to better organize their routines, especially in units with higher turnover.
Open Positions and Regional Competition
In the area covered by the Lajeado union, which spans eight municipalities in the Vale do Taquari, there are between 800 and 1,000 open positions that are difficult to fill, with 400 to 500 in commerce alone.
The opening of Via, from the Passarela group, is expected to generate about 150 job openings.
According to the union, the Santa Catarina group faced challenges in retaining employees in a previous operation at Lajeado Shopping and was cautioned about the need to adjust shifts to avoid repeating the problem.
Focuses and Expectations of the Entities
According to the president of Fecosul, Guiomar Vidor, the 5×2 model is seen as an alternative to improve the quality of life for employees and reduce turnover.
He evaluates that in the future, a 40-hour workweek could be discussed as the next step, always through negotiations between unions and companies.
The federation reports that it monitors movements in different regions and observes increasing interest among retail chains in work formats with more consecutive days off.
Labor Laws and Weekly Rest
Brazilian legislation defines a minimum number of monthly days off and establishes remunerated weekly rest, but the interval does not always occur within the seven calendar days, especially in sectors that operate Monday to Monday, such as supermarkets and pharmacies.
In recent years, the topic has generated mobilizations and negotiations.
In Porto Alegre, the Zaffari Group, a sector leader, was even targeted by worker protests, demanding adjustments to work hours.
According to information gathered by the column Minuto Varejo, the company implemented internal changes to work shifts, although it did not detail the adjustments.
Impacts and Evaluations
According to unions, the adoption of the 5×2 model at Stok Center in Lajeado was essential to enable local hiring.
The entities claim that without the new format and with salaries only at the minimum wage, the company would struggle to fill its positions.
Representatives of workers also state that the reduction in turnover and the increase in productivity can offset potential salary and workload adjustments.
The Comercial Zaffari, contacted by the report, did not respond to inquiries about the shift policy.
Work Preferences Among Younger Workers
The Lajeado union also points out that younger workers demonstrate a preference for double days off and predictable hours, which influences staff retention.
According to Rockenbach, this generation tends to prioritize a balance between personal and professional life, and the predictability of days off is one of the factors that weigh most heavily in job selection.
Prospects for the Gaúcho Retail Sector
Labor relations specialists evaluate that if the adoption of 5×2 grows, retail could gradually reorganize its shifts, with rotating schedules that maintain service and ensure weekly rest.
For entities in the sector, indicators such as average length of stay, absenteeism, and productivity per hour will guide decisions about the continuation of the model.
Will the trend consolidate as a permanent practice among Gaúcho networks or remain restricted to isolated experiences in regions with a strong industrial presence?
