On the morning of this Tuesday (21), employees contracted for the largest cellulose project on the planet by the company Niplan staged a protest at the Bracell site in Lençóis Paulista. The reason they cited is that the company has abandoned them, and they are demanding their labor rights payments that have not yet been guaranteed.

“Bracell, together with its contractor, leaves thousands of breadwinners without severance pay and people who cannot return to their cities left on the streets of São Paulo, as the workers’ accommodations that operated there would be demobilized and thousands of workers who left to earn their daily bread are now homeless, abandoned, and have pursued dreams in the largest CELULOSE PROJECT IN THE WORLD, and now they will be thrown onto the street “without a roof over their heads,” a popular saying used in the day-to-day of Northeasterners. At this moment, social networks are only talking about a MULTINATIONAL THAT LEFT COUNTLESS BREADWINNERS ON THE STREET,” reports a worker from the project.

The mega project of R$ 230 million in São Bernardo will feature a 350-meter cable-stayed viaduct, promising to reduce traffic in the surrounding area of the Paço by up to 40% and is already among the largest road interventions in the ABC region.
This is the largest private investment in the state of SP that has occurred in the last 20 years. The estimate is that by 2023, the project representing the largest cellulose investment on the planet will employ more than 18,000 new permanent employees in logistics, forestry, or industrial activities.
On the official project page of Bracell, the company emphasizes that the investment in the factory expansion is expected to create job opportunities not only in Lençóis Paulista and Macatuba but also in the areas surrounding Agudos, Areiópolis, Borebi, Bauru, Pederneiras, São Manuel, Barra Bonita, Jaú, and Igaraçu do Tietê, and throughout the state of São Paulo.
Bracell Comments on Niplan Layoffs
In a statement, Bracell emphasizes that it has terminated the contract with Niplan and, after that, made all payments that were provided for in the contract. “It is important to emphasize that it is solely Niplan’s responsibility to honor all payments of labor obligations and other debts. We clarify that the information that Bracell is responsible for any payments is unfounded,” highlighted the official statement sent to the portal Acontece na Região.
Largest Cellulose Project in the World Becomes a Nightmare for Employees Contracted by Niplan

The protesters demand their rights and emphasize that the cellulose project, which for many was a dream, is now a nightmare and synonymous with despair, as the vast majority do not know where to go and do not even have an idea of what to do to return to their families.
The video above shows the entrance of the Bracell factory blocked last Friday (17). According to the protesters, the idea was for a peaceful protest, demanding only their rights.
The new factory in SP was built with two lines that operate flexibly. Until 2023, production planning will be carried out in phases, focusing on operational stability for both products.
After this period, the lines will be used for the production of kraft or dissolving pulp, according to the company’s demands. With the expansion completed, Bracell’s new factory in SP plans to employ around 6,650 workers, both direct and outsourced, in their forestry, industrial, and logistics activities.
