The 7.5 Billion Euros from the Dutch Government Climate Fund Will Be Destined for the Green Hydrogen Industry. The Current Hub Under Development at the Port of Pecém May Receive Part of the Funds for Investments in the Projects.
The partnership between the Dutch Government and the Port of Pecém, in the state of Ceará, is on this Wednesday, (05/03), one of the major bets for the future of the complex. The European government has announced a new Climate Fund for 2024, with €28.1 billion allocated for climate spending. From this amount, part will be allocated to the boosting of the green hydrogen industry, and it may reach Brazil in the Ceará hub.
Port of Pecém May Receive Investments for Green Hydrogen Hub Projects through the Dutch Climate Fund
The Dutch government recently launched the Climate Fund for 2024, which will allocate €28.1 billion for climate spending in the country until 2030.
Of this amount, €7.5 billion will be used for the development of the green hydrogen industry, including €300 million for the import of this energy source.

This initiative could benefit green hydrogen projects at the Port of Pecém, in Ceará, which already leads in the number of projects for the production of this type of energy in Brazil.
Currently, Pecém has the Port of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, as a partner, which owns 30% of the shares in the Ceará port.
Furthermore, the Port of Rotterdam has set a goal that 25% of the green hydrogen that arrives in Europe through its operations comes from Pecém.
Thus, the partnership between the two ports through the Dutch Government could make the supply of green hydrogen to Europe even more competitive and secure.
The Dutch package for green hydrogen still allocates most of the resources to boosting domestic production.
Therefore, €5.1 billion will be invested in onshore green hydrogen projects and €1.8 billion in offshore production.
The project, presented by the Minister of Climate and Energy, Rob Jetten, still needs to be approved by parliament to move forward.
The Netherlands is committed to meeting its legal climate targets for 2030 and believes that cooperation with other countries that have the capacity to supply hydrogen can help meet the region’s demand.
Therefore, the approach of the Dutch Government towards the Port of Pecém for the green hydrogen hub may represent a good initiative for both countries.
Dutch Government Investments in the Green Hydrogen Hub May Contribute to Regional Development
With the announcement of the project, it is expected that investment in green hydrogen will help boost the economy and create green jobs in Brazil.
The Port of Pecém, in particular, could benefit significantly, as it is one of the country’s main ports for hydrogen production.
Additionally, the partnership between the Port of Rotterdam and Pecém could help make the transportation of green hydrogen more competitive and secure, providing a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
The expectation is that the project will be approved by parliament and can contribute to the country meeting its legal climate targets by 2030, moving towards climate neutrality.
“With this letter, the government takes a significant step further to meet our legal climate targets for 2030 (…) We have a delay, and therefore, we will have to do everything possible to reach this target by 2030, with the conviction that, with Europe, we are on the path to climate neutrality,” emphasized Jetten.
The investment in green hydrogen can also help position Brazil as a leader in the production and export of clean energy. The union between the Dutch Government and the Port of Pecém is just the beginning of a prosperous future.
