With Extensive Experience in the Field and Practical Knowledge, GE Is Optimistic About Delivering Operational Excellence to Its Clients

The Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), one of the largest steel producers in Latin America, contracted GE Power to supply its converter at the steel plant in Volta Redonda/RJ. Located in the city in question, the Presidente Vargas Plant has an annual production capacity of 5.8 million tons of steel. Being one of the oldest and large-scale plants in Brazil, it was inaugurated in the 1940s and has been served by GE since that time.

CSN aims to improve the reliability and efficiency of the plant. The multinational will provide the plant with an innovative drive system that includes a 12-megawatt (MW) synchronous motor, a converter to replace the old one, and a 12MW generator.

Operating at a frequency of 50 hertz, the new converter will be used to supply power to the existing equipment, as the pumps will use water from the nearby river in the steel process.

According to CSN’s senior development engineer, Douglas Gualberto, the factory was built 40 years ago, and some equipment needs refurbishment. They trust GE’s technology and capability in providing upgrade services that will help maintain the factory as one of the most productive in the region.

According to Azeez Mohammed, president and CEO of GE’s Power Conversion business division, with their extensive experience and know-how in providing electrical equipment that supplies steel mills around the world, they will continue to serve the sector, but with a more energy-efficient and reliable technology that will help their clients deliver operational excellence.
