The Contract Achievement Is Based on the Success of Six Similar Modules from GE Power Conversion Already Installed on Other Petrobras FPSOs Operating in the Pre-Salt Area
São Paulo, April 29, 2022 — GE Power Conversion was chosen by Saipem, a multinational oilfield services company, to develop the Electric Module for the Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel named P-79, from Petrobras, which will be used for oil and gas production. The module will be manufactured in Asia and delivered in 2023 to the integration shipyard in South Korea. The FPSO is scheduled to begin operations in the Búzios field, in the Santos Basin, in 2025. Búzios, located on the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, is considered the largest deep-water oil field in the world.
What Does This Contract Include?
The partnership between GE Power Conversion and the Italian contractor Saipem for the delivery of the Electric Module includes the supply of medium and low voltage distribution panels, as well as motor control centers and high-power transformers for the P-79 vessel with a high degree of local content. The Electric Module to be supplied by GE Power Conversion is considered the heart of the platform, as it provides all the energy to power the entire FPSO, in addition to housing the equipment that controls the vessel. The module can be compared in size to a three or four-story building, weighing approximately 2,000 tons, 25 meters tall, 22 meters wide, and 33 meters long.
“GE Power Conversion has already delivered Electric Modules for six FPSOs belonging to Petrobras and operating in the pre-salt area, including the P-75 and P-77 in the Búzios field, with a scope similar to what will be supplied for the P-79. GE’s proven track record of demonstrating technical knowledge for the demanding operational profile of the FPSO has been a key success factor in securing this important contract,” said André Ribeiro, Commercial Leader for the marine sector of GE Power Conversion in Latin America.

GE Power Conversion in Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais, is responsible for project management, engineering, and manufacturing of the electrical equipment for the Electric Module, which will be assembled by the Wasco Shipyard in Indonesia and then installed on the floating production storage and offloading vessel at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (DSME) in South Korea. After assembly, installation, and commissioning of the equipment, the FPSO will navigate from Southeast Asia to the Brazilian coast.
“This is truly a global effort, highlighting GE’s commitment to its customers and its ability to produce equipment in Brazil, with a high level of local content and meeting all the requirements of the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) for offshore installations,” states Carlos Adriano Guimarães, Sales Director of GE Power Conversion in Latin America.
