The Hatch That Puts Geely in the Electric Compact Race
The arrival of the Geely EX2 promises to shake up the Brazilian electric car market. The Chinese brand, which had already launched the mid-size SUV EX5 in July, is now betting on a more affordable and compact model to directly compete with the BYD Dolphin, which currently dominates the entry category.
Still in the testing phase, the model is already seen almost without camouflage on the streets of Curitiba (PR), according to sightings published by the profile @placaverde. Official details have not yet been released, but indications suggest that the electric car should be launched with a price around R$ 150 thousand, practically the same value as the BYD Dolphin, priced from R$ 149,990.
This price proximity is no coincidence. Geely’s strategy is clear: to offer a direct competitor, with very similar characteristics, but with some differentiators to win over the Brazilian public.

Dimensions of Onix, Cutting-Edge Technology, and a Larger Trunk than the Rival
Originally called Geome Xingyuan, the hatch that will here be known as Geely EX2 measures 4.14 meters in length, practically the same size as a Chevrolet Onix. The wheelbase of 2.65 meters is equivalent to that of the Volkswagen T-Cross, which should ensure good interior space.
The width of 1.81 m and the height of 1.58 m complete the dimensions, but what stands out most is the trunk: 375 liters, compared to 345 liters of the Dolphin. In addition, the EX2 offers an extra space of 70 liters in the frunk — a compartment under the hood, a solution that is still rare in models sold in Brazil.
Inside, the finish is simpler than that of the BYD Dolphin, but Geely is betting on technology to attract consumers. The dashboard features an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.6-inch multimedia screen, and voice commands. There is also wireless phone charging and a two-spoke steering wheel.
In terms of comfort, the open center console and the options for different colored upholstery show the brand’s intention to offer a modern and functional product, without necessarily positioning itself as luxurious.

What to Expect from Geely’s Price and Strategy in the Brazilian Market
In China, the Geely EX2 has already accumulated over 100,000 units sold in less than a year, proof that there is a great demand for entry-level electric compacts. The hatch comes with different motor and battery configurations. Options range from 78 hp to 114 hp, with batteries supplied by CATL.
There are two main versions:
- 30.1 kWh, with a range of 310 km in the Chinese cycle.
- 40.2 kWh, with a range of 410 km.
However, it is worth noting that the range figures released in China are unlikely to be repeated in Brazil. This is because the cycle used there is more optimistic than that adopted by the Brazilian Vehicle Labeling Program (PBEV). In other words, the real range may be much lower.
Another relevant point is the possibility of local production. The EX2 and EX5 are strong candidates to be manufactured in the country in partnership with Renault, in São José dos Pinhais (PR). If this materializes by 2027, the models could become more competitive in the Brazilian market, both in price and availability.
This move follows the same logic as other Chinese brands that are already operating here, such as BYD and GWM, which decided to invest in local factories to gain scale and reduce logistics costs.
A Future of More Affordable Electric Compacts?
With the Geely EX2 arriving at around R$ 150 thousand, Brazilian consumers now have another option within a price range that until recently was restricted to high-end combustion cars. The model promises to balance interior space, onboard technology, and competitive pricing, directly challenging the BYD Dolphin.
The big question is: will the public trust yet another Chinese brand, still little known in Brazil, to invest in an electric car that costs the same as many mid-range flex SUVs?
