The Math Genius of China. Despite Teaching at One of China’s Largest Universities, Wei Only Spends 300 Yuan a Month and Refuses Luxuries.
Wei Dongyi, a professor at Peking University, went viral on Chinese social media in recent days. But it wasn’t due to a new theory or a math award.
What caught attention was his unkempt appearance, extremely simple lifestyle, and the fact that he lives on just 300 yuan a month — about 40 dollars.
Early Math Genius of the Olympics
Born in 1991, Wei stood out early on. Still in high school, he won gold medals with perfect scores at the 49th and 50th International Mathematical Olympiads.

The achievement was so impressive that he was able to enter Peking University directly, without having to take the rigorous gaokao exam.
Today, at 33, he is a respected professor at the same university where he studied. Even with a successful career, he maintains a life completely outside the common standards of consumption or vanity.

Unexpected Virality
Wei’s digital fame began in 2021. A video in which he appeared with messy hair, crooked teeth, simple clothing, and a giant water bottle went viral.
He was also carrying a plastic bag with buns at the time of filming. During the interview, he answered timidly and often ended his sentences saying, “I don’t know what else to say.”
Quickly, internet users began to call him “the ugliest professor at Peking University.”
His simple appearance contrasted with his brilliant resume. Many were surprised to discover that this shy man with an unconcerned appearance was one of the most respected mathematicians in the country.

Frugality by Principle
With a salary of about 85 thousand dollars a year, Wei could have a comfortable life. But he chose to live on just 300 yuan a month.
According to a cousin, this choice is a matter of principle. He prefers listening to the radio to surfing the internet, rarely goes out with friends, and has little interest in things outside of mathematics.
One of the episodes that impressed the public the most was when he refused money from a group of doctoral students who asked for his help in solving a complex model.
Wei solved the problem quickly and, instead of accepting payment, only asked that they recharge his transportation card. “There’s no need to pay me for such an easy problem,” he replied.
Debut on Social Media
Despite his reclusive life, Wei finally created profiles on the social media platforms Douyin and RedNote.
The first video he posted was only four seconds long but was enough to attract immediate attention. In five days, he accumulated over 23 million followers.
The video also rekindled concerns about his appearance. Thin and missing some teeth, Wei sparked debates about his health and lifestyle.
However, his family stated that he does not intend to become an influencer. The only goal, according to them, is to share his love for mathematics.
On social media, many followers ask for respect. “His world is remarkably pure – just numbers and formulas. Please don’t hurt him. Leave him in peace,” wrote a user. For admirers, Wei Dongyi is more than a genius. He is a symbol of humility and true dedication to knowledge.
