BMW, Car Manufacturer, Finally Got the Right to Manufacture Its Own Batteries for Electric Cars After Paying Solid Power
The German multinational car company BMW and Solid Power, a battery company, are collaborating on a new project for 2023. Now, BMW, which was previously investing in battery brands, like Ford, is sharing some rights with Solid Power to develop its own batteries for its electric cars.
The battery company is best known in the solid-state battery sector, having established a futuristic battery production line for testing and qualification purposes in June 2022. After this mass production of batteries, Solid Power will distribute them between Ford and BMW.
Following this venture, the battery company is now “sharing” its battery cell projects and manufacturing with BMW, which will have to meet certain specifications. This deal will be worth US$ 20 million, to be paid between now and June 2024. From BMW’s side, the specifications for battery production will be met.

Difference Between Solid Power Batteries and Conventional Batteries
Solid Power’s batteries differ from the “conventional” batteries typically supplied by companies, as conventional batteries are made of lithium ions with liquid electrolytes. In contrast, Solid’s electric car batteries are made with solid electrolytes, which have significant advantages, such as a reduced risk of fire.
Contrary to what one might think, Solid Power is not selling its battery manufacturing rights to BMW. Instead, the company is supplying the necessary materials for the production of electric car batteries once BMW has its battery production line ready.
Thus, BMW will produce its own batteries based on those developed by Solid Power, to be assembled at BMW’s factories. Production will start with prototypes.
