Over 40% Savings With Compressed Natural Gas
In the state of Rio de Janeiro, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stands out as the most competitive and economical fuel. Drivers who choose CNG can save over 40% monthly compared to using ethanol. This financial advantage is amplified by the fact that CNG allows traveling twice the distance that ethanol covers with the same amount of fuel.
Competitive Prices and Accessibility of CNG
Currently, the price of CNG in Rio de Janeiro is 1.3% lower than in the same period last year, a difference influenced by the end of the Provisional Measure that eliminated the PIS and Cofins rates on compressed natural gas. According to the Ticket Log Price Index (IPTL), there was a 13% drop in the price of CNG in the Southeast in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2022.
Rio de Janeiro has the largest fleet of light vehicles converted to CNG in the country, with over 1.6 million vehicles. With more than 650 gas stations spread throughout the state, drivers can easily travel using only CNG, even to neighboring states such as Minas Gerais, São Paulo, and Espírito Santo. Naturgy plans to invest over R$ 195 million by 2027, adding 200 new stations to the network.

Efficiency and Environmental Benefits of CNG
From an efficiency standpoint, an economy car in Rio de Janeiro can travel approximately 14 kilometers with 1 m³ of CNG, surpassing the mileage of ethanol and gasoline. Additionally, CNG must cost twice the value of ethanol for its savings to be negated, highlighting its economic advantage.
The benefits of CNG are not limited to savings. Environmentally, CNG is a cleaner option, emitting 20% to 30% less carbon dioxide than gasoline. Drivers who choose CNG also have the right to a 62.5% discount on the IPVA, further encouraging its adoption.
Incentives for Vehicle Conversion
To further promote vehicle conversion to CNG and its advantages, Naturgy will launch its second annual informational campaign in Rio de Janeiro. “The campaign will help consumers calculate their savings when opting for CNG and thus make the best decision,” explains Giselia Pontes, Commercial Director of Naturgy.
Naturgy provides an online savings simulator on its website to assist drivers in calculating performance and savings with the use of CNG in cubic meters, making it easier to understand the benefits of this fuel.
The current scenario in Rio de Janeiro with CNG reflects a significant shift in drivers’ preferences towards a more economical and environmentally sustainable fuel option. With the continuous development of CNG infrastructure and informational campaigns, it is expected that more drivers in the state will transition to this more efficient and economical fuel.
