Governor Rui Costa Presented to the Executives of Siemens Energy the Structure of the State of Bahia to Receive New Investments in This Area.
On an international mission, the governor of Bahia, Rui Costa, met on this Monday (10/18/2021) in Berlin, the capital of Germany, with executives from Siemens Energy. Accompanied by state secretaries of Economic Development, Nelson Leal; Infrastructure, Marcus Cavalcanti; and the superintendent of investment attraction from SDE, Paulo Guimarães, the governor learned about the company’s technology for the production and application of green hydrogen, considered the fuel of the future that may be produced in the state. Attracting New Investments for the State of Bahia
On the occasion, Rui presented the structure of the state of Bahia to receive new investments in this area. “In this first meeting, we discussed wind energy projects, solar energy, and developing a pilot project for the production of green hydrogen, which is the future of energy generation, discussed worldwide. We also talked about other partnerships with Siemens Energy in the fields of automation, security, health, and urban mobility, which should generate jobs and income for the people of Bahia,” highlighted the governor.
Hydrogen is the most efficient fuel available, having three times the energy capacity of gasoline. It is used, for example, by NASA in space rockets. The disadvantage of using hydrogen on an industrial scale is that current production relies on natural gas and generates a large amount of greenhouse gases. The solution being developed by Siemens Energy, which motivated the governor’s visit to the company, is the clean production of hydrogen through electrolysis, a chemical process that uses renewable energy and water.

During the meeting, Siemens Energy presented the functionalities of green hydrogen for mobility, serving as fuel for urban buses, airplanes, ships, and how clean large-scale production will allow to feed industries. They also presented a pilot project installed in Chile, which will use green hydrogen to manufacture gasoline.
According to the Director of Government Relations at Siemens Energy in Brazil, Henrique Paiva, Bahia has all the conditions to receive these investments. “We left very happy from this meeting because we share the same visions of world development with the Bahia delegation. The state has all the necessary infrastructure for this new production. It has wind energy, qualified people, factories, local consumption, and a port for export. It is just a matter of aligning the strategic alliances among all participants in this partnership,” he stated.
The growing global market for green hydrogen is expected to be worth US$ 11 trillion by 2050, according to expert estimates. “The arrival of wind and solar energy has changed the reality of the regions where they have been installed in Bahia, creating jobs and income, which reflects in commerce and quality of life for people. We want to amplify these effects with new partnerships,” emphasized Rui. The governor also proposed that Siemens Energy participate, as a partner of the State, in the technical training of students who live in areas with renewable energy parks. The idea is that these young people from the state school system be prepared to work in the maintenance and implementation of these clean energy projects.

The company Solar Newen Bahia Energia signed a letter of intent with the Secretariat of Economic Development (SDE) for the construction of a new photovoltaic plant intended for solar energy generation in the municipality of Barreiras. For the execution of the project, the company estimates an investment of R$ 1.080 billion. The enterprise will hire 990 workers for its construction and generate 135 jobs during the operational phase.
The Secretary of Economic Development, Nelson Leal, stated that “in July of this year, the Electricity Trading Chamber recorded that Bahia ranked second among the states generating solar energy in the country. And this protocol they signed is an indication that the sector only tends to grow in the state,” he added.
According to the website BahiadeValor, the solar energy generation projects in Bahia have already generated 13,000 direct jobs during the construction phase of those already in operation, and the SDE estimates that more 47,400 direct jobs will be created during the construction phase for the parks that are under construction or will soon start.
