Construction of the Angra 3 nuclear power plant is expected to resume in June, in two phases. The MME said that the venture could receive a contribution of up to 15 billion reais

The Government has announced that it will resume, next week, the construction process of the Angra 3 nuclear power plant, located on Itaorna beach, in Angra dos Reis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. According to the announcement, he will also hold the opening of proposals from companies interested in participating in the development work, in which investments can reach R$ 15 billion. Around 18 groups bought the notice and visited the site where the unit's two buildings will be built – one to house the reactor (dome) and a second for auxiliary use. Resumption of construction of the Angra 3 nuclear power plant

The Angra 3 nuclear power plant is the largest enterprise of infrastructure planned in Brazil in 2021, with an estimated cost of installations of around R$ 15 billion. The initial project for the nuclear power plant calls for the construction of two buildings, one to house the reactor and the other for auxiliary use. According to information from the Government, the first stage in the construction process of Angra 3 consists of opening proposals from companies interested in participating in the construction of the enterprise.

The expectation is that the resumption of construction of the nuclear power plant will start in June of this year and be completed in the year 2026. There is still the forecast to add, to the national electrical system, about 1.405 megawatts (MW) of capacity energy installed.

The Angra 3 work has accumulated 30 years of stoppages and carries a debt of R$ 9 billion in financing with public banks. A 1st attempt to resume the works was made in 2010, but, in 2015, the project was paralyzed again because of the Lava Jato developments, in which the operation identified deviations of funds at the Angra 3 nuclear power plant.

Government says Angra 3 works will contribute to the energy system

Ney Zanella dos Santos, head of the strategic management consultancy at the MME, says that the known uranium reserves in Brazil already guarantee the supply of the Angra 3 Nuclear Power Plants and the others in the area, for more than 300 years.

Bento Albuquerque says that Brazil does not have the number of desirable nuclear power plants that have been present in the country's planning for 40 years. The MME minister also says that if Brazil had the 6 plants that were planned, today it would not be going through this moment, emphasizing that the nuclear power plant is also a type of clean energy. Bento referred to the low levels in the country's water reservoirs, which supply hydroelectric plants. This energy source corresponds to 65% of the country's energy matrix, according to the minister.
