Commerce will be suspended on the days of the national team’s matches during the World Cup, and public servants will be released hours before the games.

The rule applies to the three national team matches in the group stage that take place in June 2026, against Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland. On the national team’s game days, street commerce closes, public servants leave three hours earlier, and those working in stores, one hour earlier. Health and safety, however, continue as usual.

With the 2026 World Cup underway, the Federal District has already defined how the routine will be on the national team’s game days. The rule affects commerce, shopping malls, and public service working hours. In summary, when Brazil takes the field, many people leave earlier, and street commerce stops.

The rules were detailed by the Diário do Comércio. Public servants will be released three hours before each match, except for essential areas such as health and safety. Those working in stores and shopping malls get one hour less of work. However, it is worth noting that there is no national rule for this, so what applies in the DF does not automatically apply to the rest of the country.

How commerce and working hours are on the national team’s game days in the DF

In the Federal District, the national team’s game days change almost everyone’s schedule.

According to the report, the operation of commerce, shopping malls, and public services will be affected during Brazil’s matches.

Public servants leave three hours before the initial whistle, a rule that does not apply to essential sectors, such as health and safety, which remain open.

Those working in commerce also get a break.

Employees of stores and shopping malls will be released one hour earlier to watch the games.

And there’s a detail that affects many people’s pockets: during the first three national team games, street commerce remains closed.

On these days, those who depend on the street need to plan ahead.

Shopping malls, food courts, and what remains open

Not everything stops completely. And this is an important part.

According to Metrópoles, in shopping malls, the return after the end of the match is optional, meaning it depends on the operating hours of each establishment.

Each store can decide whether to reopen or not when the game ends.

However, the food courts and leisure areas do not close.

They continue to operate normally, even on the days of the national team’s games.

So, if the idea is to watch the match and then eat something at the mall, in theory, you can combine both activities. It’s worth confirming with the establishment beforehand, as hours may vary.

There is no national rule, and this changes everything

This is where the biggest confusion of the entire World Cup lies.

Contrary to what many people think, there is no national rule that automatically turns the day of the national team’s game into a holiday or optional point.

The time off is a local decision.

That’s why the response varies so much from one place to another.

Many cities and municipalities declare an optional point on these days, but it depends on each city hall, each government, and even each company.

What the Federal District has defined applies to the DF.

In other words, the safest route is to confirm with your employer or the city hall of your city before counting on the time off.

When Brazil plays in the group stage

To organize yourself, the way is to look at the national team’s calendar.

In the group stage, Brazil debuts on Saturday, June 13, 2026, against Morocco, in New York and New Jersey, at the MetLife Stadium.

Then, they play on Friday, June 19, 2026, against Haiti, in Philadelphia, at the Lincoln Financial Field.

The third match closes the first phase.

It will be on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, against Scotland, in Miami, at the Hard Rock Stadium.

It is precisely these three days of the national team’s games that are expected to affect commerce and work hours in the Federal District, according to the report.

In the end, the World Cup affects the routine of the Federal District, but with specific and local rules.

The street commerce closes during Brazil’s games, public servants leave earlier, and shopping malls operate on reduced hours, while the food courts remain open.

All this, remember, applies to the DF, not the entire country.

In your city, will there be a holiday or optional workday on the day of the national team’s game? Do you prefer to stop everything to watch Brazil or continue with the normal workday? Tell us in the comments how it works in your region, and share this article with that colleague who still doesn’t know if they will work on the game day.
