Solar power plants in Minas Gerais will start operating in November, later this year

At the end of 2020, the government of Minas Gerais and EMGD (Empresa Mineira de Geração Distribuida) closed an agreement, in which 5 new solar power plants will be inaugurated in the state in November. The memorandum of intent also provides for incentives for development, the generation of new jobs and the reduction of social inequality in the northern region of the state of Minas Gerais. Following the investment plan of more than R$ 400 million, EMGD foresees, by August, the hiring to build three more plants in Taiobeiras and one in Minas Novas, in Minas Gerais, which will be completed in mid-2022. According to André Mendonça , director of operations at EMGD, the simultaneous execution of the projects will generate almost two hundred jobs in the region, in addition to boosting the local economy through indirect services in the accommodation and food sectors, for example.

With approximately R$ 65 million available and its own engineering team, EMGD will apply the best and newest technology, aiming at the quality and performance of the new assets in Minas Gerais. The solar power plants will have a ray tracing system, the tracker, bifacial modules and equipment from renowned suppliers.

Occupying an area of approximately eight football fields, each solar power plant will have an average of 3,2 MWp of power and will be able to generate enough energy to supply 2.700 homes per month with an average consumption of 200 kWh/month. To this end, more than 30 photovoltaic modules will be divided among the five units in the state of Minas Gerais.

MG still remains in the lead as the state with the most investments in the solar energy sector

Only in the first four months of this year (January to April 2021) 1,1 GW were added to the installed solar energy capacity in Brazil, incremented by Distributed Generation, and more than half of that amount in Minas Gerais. In total, distributed generation and new investments from solar energy accounted for 1,8% of the Brazilian electricity matrix in April, reaching 8,813 GW.

Minas Gerais continues to be the leader in distributed generation among the states, with 17,8% of installed projects. Following, the state of São Paulo (12,5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (12,4%). The main driver of distributed generation has been the residential sector, with 40% of installed power. In second place comes commerce with 36,7%, the rural segment (13,1%) and industry (8,5%).
