With the aim of lowering costs with transporting loads by trucks, the PL called “BR DO MAR” was sent to Congress on an urgent basis. Railway projects and cabotage navigation are among the main milestones of the Ministry of Infrastructure, which may favor the production and movement of ships for the Brazilian shipbuilding industry
The bill signed and sent yesterday (11) by the government to the National Congress may favor the Brazilian shipbuilding industry. The PL called “BR do Mar” aims to encourage navigation by cargo transport ships within the country, reducing logistics costs and increasing operations at Brazilian ports. Representatives of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Economy (Tarcísio and Guedes respectively) were at the signing.

“We are going to lower the cost of transport throughout Brazil. Today, the ore becomes steel in the south, and arrives in the northeast 40% more expensive than if it had gone to China and back. This is due to the cost of transportation”, said Guedes euphorically in the video.

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, amplification of handled containers will be the highlight of this PL
On the official page of MInfra, there is an official note on the text of this PL, whose highlight is the generation of new maritime routes, reducing expenses with the transport logistics most used today, land transport by trucks and trailers. This 40% increase by 2022 could mean 2 million TEU more in cargo handled.
“The project will make it possible to reduce costs. We estimate a 40% increase in the fleet over the next three years”, said the Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio Freitas, in a video during the BR do Mar announcement.
In the view of the Federal Government, the PL favors 4 fundamental aspects of cabotage: Costs, Ports, naval industry and fleet.
- Costs – The restructuring must act on the bureaucratic procedures of navigation between the ports of Brazil, with the aim of subtracting taxes and streamlining them.
- Portos – With more flow of vessels and large ships, the port terminals will have more operations and will be modernized, generating job openings and specialization programs
- Shipbuilding – Encouraging the docking of vessels flying international flags, selling equipment for ships and maximizing services in the sector
- Rub – Companies and ports will have autonomy to decide where to build their ships, in addition to reducing the bureaucracy for registering waterway movement traffic.
