This Thursday (1/19) at the Planalto Palace, the Minister of Ports and Airports, Márcio França reaffirmed that the Ministry of Ports and Airports should continue to care for the national waterways, opposing the Minister of Transport, Renan Filho, from the MDB, who intended to take the area to his ministry – as was reported this Wednesday (1/18).
“The waterways and the entire system are currently in the Ministry of Ports and Airports, it’s how things were aggregated in the provisional measure,” said França when questioned by Correio, and he added, “President Lula, naturally, when he made this division, made a decision, but it is evident that as President of the Republic, if he wants to make another decision, we respect that.”
The minister Renan Filho stated that he would negotiate with the Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, and with the executive secretary of the agency, Miriam Belchior, the recomposition of responsibilities of the Ministry of Transport to accommodate this area, to which Márcio said that, “Everyone can claim everything, but I would say that the state of the work is the cut that was made when the provisional measure was edited,” he pointed out.
Renan Filho made his statement this Wednesday (1/18) during the launch of the 100-day investment plan for the Ministry of Transport. “I believe that waterways are means to reach ports and airports. With the division, there is a gray area,” said Renan Filho. “We are talking with the Civil House and also with the National Congress about the issue,” he added. However, according to what Correio found out, the topic was never discussed together with Márcio França, the head of Ports and Airports.

França pointed out that the new government has not yet managed to appoint officials for the port authorities. “Since we have not yet made changes to the port authorities, the directors there are the same as before, starting this week with the changes, all port councils are convened to alter the port authorities, and then we will start our way.”
Márcio França also indicated the level of deficiencies existing in Brazilian ports, “Not all ports are in their proper dredging, so some ships are not able to reach their fullness, including passengers, and at the same time in ports and airports. May we have modernized and adequate ports.” The minister also did not rule out the privatization of services in the ports: “What we discuss regarding the privatization of services, which may even be new services like dredging.”
Conversation in São Paulo
He also talked about the conversation he had with Gilberto Kassab (PSD), who is the Secretary of the Civil House of the São Paulo State government. “I spoke yesterday (1/18) with Secretary Kassab, who is someone in the São Paulo government so that we could come up with an approach of ideas, of concept. And I have the impression that Governor Tarcísio himself understands that, as there was an electoral change, the logic of privatizing the authority is more than outdated,” pointed out França.
