In Michigan, 33-Year-Old Man Finds Forgotten Scratch-Off Ticket on Gas Station Counter, Pays US$ 10, Wins Top Prize of US$ 1 Million, Opts for One-Time Payout of US$ 693,000 and Reports Pressure After Unexpected Win in State Lottery
A 33-year-old man won US$ 1 million in Michigan after finding an abandoned scratch-off ticket on the counter of a gas station, buying it for US$ 10, and choosing to receive US$ 693,000 in a lump sum, according to an official report.
Forgotten Ticket Changes Destiny in Michigan
The episode took place at a gas station in the state of Michigan, where the scratch-off ticket was left on the counter after someone else abandoned the purchase. The man seized the opportunity and decided to buy the ticket.
According to the winner himself, the decision to buy the abandoned ticket replaced the initial intention of acquiring a new game. The unexpected choice ultimately resulted in the top prize of US$ 1 million.

Purchase for US$ 10 Secured Maximum Prize
“Another person backed out of buying it, so I grabbed it,” the winner recounted while explaining how he found the ticket left on the counter. The game cost US$ 10 and was scratched off right after the purchase.
“I scratched off the ticket and couldn’t believe what I saw when I realized I had won a million dollars,” the man stated, describing the moment of discovering the top prize.
One-Time Payment Option Reduces Final Amount
After confirming the result, the winner visited the headquarters of the Michigan Lottery to claim his prize. He chose to receive US$ 693,000 in a single payment, opting out of receiving the US$ 1 million in installments.
“Winning is an amazing feeling, but it also brings a lot of pressure because you start imagining all the things you could do with that amount,” he said, commenting on the financial decision made.
Unusual Cases Repeat in the State
The case was reported by People, which highlighted that Michigan has recorded other lottery prizes considered atypical. Similar episodes draw attention for the way winning tickets are chosen.
