First N163/5.X Turbines Installed
The Nordex Group is revolutionizing wind energy generation with the installation of the first N163/5.X turbines at the Karahka Wind Farm, located in the North Ostrobothnia region of Finland. This project, a partnership between Helen Ltd, a Finnish energy supplier, and the Ålandsbanken Wind Power Fund, stands out due to its innovative concrete and steel hybrid tower, the first of its kind developed by Nordex.
The Rise of Hybrid Tower Technology
The hybrid tower, with an impressive height of 168 meters, is a significant achievement for the Nordex Group, consolidating its experience in the creation of concrete towers in countries such as Brazil, South Africa, and Mexico. So far, more than 2,500 units of these towers are operational and showing positive results. Lujabetoni Oy, a local company, is responsible for producing the concrete elements for these innovative towers, which are assembled on-site with segments of up to 20 meters.
This hybrid tower is not only the tallest ever installed by the Nordex Group, but it also promises to reach greater heights in the coming years, significantly increasing efficiency in wind energy production. An example of this is the future installation of a 179-meter tower in Germany, planned for 2024.

The world has bet on green hydrogen as the fuel of the future, but now faces the side effect: producing 1 kilogram requires about 9 liters of ultrapure water, and the largest projects on the planet are precisely in the driest regions of the Earth, where water is already scarce for people.
International Collaboration and Climate Adaptation
The Karahka Wind Farm is a project developed by the Finnish subsidiary of the German group VSB, based in Dresden, and is strategically located north of Oulainen, near the Gulf of Bothnia. This location is not only ideal for capturing winds but also presents a challenge due to the harsh climatic conditions of the Finnish winter. To overcome this, Nordex’s wind turbines in the park are adapted for cold climates and equipped with an Advanced Anti-Icing System, preventing ice formation on the rotor blades.
The order for the Karahka Wind Farm, placed in 2022, includes 25 N163/5.X wind turbines, with a total capacity of 147.5 MW. This project not only reinforces the Nordex Group’s position as a leader in wind energy innovations but also serves as a testament to the global commitment to renewable and sustainable energy.
With this initiative, the Nordex Group and its partners are not only advancing wind energy production but also setting new standards in wind technology, climate adaptability, and international cooperation. The Karahka Wind Farm is a shining example of how innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand, paving the way for a greener and cleaner future.
