The Gold Mine in MG, Located in the Municipalities of Conceição do Pará and Pitangui, Was Interdicted by the National Mining Agency (ANM) on Saturday (07/12). The Reason? An “Imminent Risk” of Landslide in a Pile of Tailings Identified During Inspection. The Decision Immediately Suspends All Activities on Site and Raises the Alert About Safety in the Region.
The responsible mining company, Mineração Serras do Oeste Limitada (MSOL), owned by the Canadian Jaguar Mining, reported that it had identified an “anomalia” in a pile of tailings at the Turmalina unit, in the village of Castilhos, during an inspection at the gold mine. The mining company claims to have acted quickly to alert the authorities and take action, but the incident has already had consequences.
Evacuated Community and Emergency Measures
The landslide recorded on Saturday morning mobilized authorities and the local population. A total of 67 residents from the Castilhos community were evacuated, as well as workers from the gold mine in MG. Fortunately, there were no injuries. The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, determined strict oversight of the facilities and reinforced the priority of ensuring the safety of all involved.
“Take immediate measures to ensure the stability of the structures, safety of the mine, the surrounding community, and the environment,” the minister stated in a memorandum.

ANM Strengthens Oversight at the Gold Mine in MG

During an inspection of the site, ANM technicians confirmed the danger of landslide and the lack of proof of stability of the facility. The interdiction of the gold mine in MG also involves emergency actions to protect the community and the environment.
The ANM authorized the mining company to carry out necessary interventions to stabilize the pile of tailings. These measures aim to prevent new accidents and minimize socio-environmental impacts.
Mining Company Promises Collaboration
Jaguar Mining stated, through a note, that it is providing support to the affected community and keeping authorities informed. According to the company, all emergency actions were taken immediately after the issue was identified.
“We are committed to offering support to the local community residents and will keep the regulatory bodies updated on the situation”, declared the mining company.
