Strategy, Investment in Technology and Infrastructure Are Pointed Out as Pillars of Chinese Success in Electric Mobility
The Chinese automaker BYD is increasingly close to becoming a global leader in the automotive sector. In the first quarter of 2025, the company set historic sales records, reinforcing its ambition to occupy the top of the market.
The results are impressive for their growth rate and global acceptance of its models.
Numbers That Stand Out
In March 2025 alone, BYD recorded 377,420 electric cars sold worldwide.
-
Volvo presses the charge button, ends free recharging, and leaves electric car owners calculating each kWh at charging stations.
-
Nissan Frontier Attack 2026 hides under its darkened appearance a 2.3 biturbo engine, 4×4 traction, and multilink suspension that make the entry-level version seem much more expensive.
-
The same used Toyota Corolla Hybrid that costs R$ 134,000 in Brazil appears for US$ 19,400 in the USA, exposing a price gap between two markets that buy Toyota’s most famous electrified sedan.
-
Nissan Sentra 2026 reveals why there is still a mid-size sedan with the strength to compete against SUVs, Corolla, Civic, and Jetta using technology, comfort, and cost-effectiveness.
This number contributed to a total of nearly one million electric vehicles delivered just in the first quarter of the year.
Of this total, 206,084 units were sold outside of China, representing a growth of 111% compared to the same period in 2024.
The data shows that the brand is conquering new markets, like Spain, where it is already among the favorites of consumers looking for electric models with good cost-effectiveness.
Growth Among Group Brands
Within the BYD group, several brands contributed to the high numbers. In March:
- Yangwang delivered 133 units.
- Fang Cheng Bao sold 8,051 models.
- Denza totaled 12,620 units.
- The main brand BYD was responsible for 350,615 vehicles.
The results show a diversification of brands and a strong expansion strategy, with models for different consumer profiles.
Hybrids Also on the Rise
It wasn’t just fully electric cars that drove BYD’s numbers. Plug-in hybrid vehicles also showed significant performance. In the first quarter of 2025, there were 569,710 registrations, an increase of 76% compared to 2024.
Currently, hybrids represent the largest share of the company’s sales, with 57.8% market share, while 100% electric models account for 42.2%.
Total Above 1 Million in the Quarter
Summing all of the company’s lines, including buses, vans, and trucks, the BYD Group sold 1,000,804 units in the first quarter. Of this total, 990,711 were passenger vehicles, representing a growth of 58.7% compared to the first quarter of 2024.
Since April 2022, BYD completely abandoned traditional combustion engines, such as gasoline or diesel. Today, all its production is focused on electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.
The Future of the Company
BYD’s trajectory shows accelerated expansion. In 2023, the company sold 3 million vehicles. In 2024, that number rose to 4.3 million. For 2025, the expectation is to reach 5.5 million units sold.
The declared goal is ambitious: to surpass Toyota, which currently sells more than 10 million cars per year. The target is to reach this level by the end of the decade and become the number one automaker on the planet.
With the current numbers, BYD shows that the path is being steadfastly traced. And, if the pace continues, the Chinese brand could soon alter the global leadership of the automotive sector.
