The duplication of BR-424 entered a new phase in Maceió with the viaduct of the Metropolitan Arch, cranes, and temporary detours for drivers. The package targets heavy traffic, foresees marginal roads, bridges, two other viaducts, and an investment of R$ 266.7 million to reorganize the daily flow in the Alagoas region until delivery.

The duplication of BR-424 gained a new stage in Maceió on Sunday, June 28, 2026, with the beginning of the installation of the beams of a viaduct at the junction of the former AL-101, now BR-349/AL. The work is part of the Metropolitan Arch of Maceió and is conducted within the Alagoas road infrastructure package.

According to NSC Total, the intervention involves the National Department of Transport Infrastructure, the federal government, and work teams operating in the Metropolitan Region of Maceió. The objective is to reduce congestion, improve road safety, and facilitate the circulation of cargo and drivers on a route used daily by more than 13,000 people.

The most recent stage of the duplication of BR-424 involves the installation of 18 longitudinal beams on the viaduct located at the junction of the former AL-101, now BR-349/AL. There will be nine beams in each direction of the highway, positioned with the support of two cranes during the operation.

The planned structure will be 60 meters long, 24 meters wide, and 6.4 meters high. The movement of the beams transforms the construction site into one of the most visible phases of the work, as it marks the advancement of an elevated structure that should reorganize a point considered strategic for the flow of the region.

Metropolitan Arch attempts to remove heavy traffic from Maceió

The duplication of BR-424 is part of the Metropolitan Arc of Maceió, a project planned to redistribute traffic that currently pressures the roads of the Alagoas capital. The idea is to create an alternative capable of improving vehicle movement, especially trucks and cargo that pass through urban sections.

According to the proposal presented for the work, the goal is to remove heavy traffic from within Maceió and reduce bottlenecks at the junction. This type of intervention not only changes travel time but also the way the city coexists with cargo transport, the industrial hub, and access to the coast.

Investment of R$ 266.7 million expands the package

The project receives an investment of R$ 266.7 million and is part of the New Growth Acceleration Program. The package includes the duplication of 16.2 kilometers of BR-424/AL, between kilometers 92 and 108.2, in a section considered important for the Metropolitan Region of Maceió.

Besides the new lane, the interventions include earthworks, paving, implementation of marginal roads, restoration of the existing lane, and construction of three viaducts. The amount is noteworthy because it is not limited to a single isolated work, but to a set of changes designed to increase capacity, safety, and flow.

Bridges, marginal roads, and viaducts are part of the same plan

The duplication of BR-424 is not limited to the viaduct that received the first beams. The project also includes two other viaducts, located at the junctions with BR-316/AL and in the Industrial Hub, points that are part of the traffic reorganization around the capital.

The package also includes the restoration and widening of the bridge over the Remédio River, in addition to the construction of a new bridge at the same location. These structures are crucial for the duplication to function as a complete corridor, and not just as a partial expansion of an already pressured highway.

More than 13,000 drivers may benefit per day

It is estimated that more than 13,000 drivers who travel daily through the Metropolitan Region of Maceió will benefit from the advancement of the duplication of BR-424. The number helps to gauge why the work is considered strategic for mobility, logistics, and road safety.

For those who use the highway every day, the promise involves fewer interruptions, better flow distribution, and reduced conflicts between light and heavy vehicles. The expected gain is not just in speed, but in the predictability of the route, something essential for workers, transporters, and residents of the region.

Traffic detours accompany the execution of the beams

During the installation of the first nine beams, traffic in the Maceió–Praia do Francês direction will be diverted through a roundabout near the former Federal Highway Police station. In the opposite direction, the flow remains unchanged in this first stage of the operation.

In the next phase, when the remaining beams are positioned, traffic in the Praia do Francês–Maceió direction will be directed to an operational detour in the central median. The measure aims to maintain circulation in both directions of the road while work progresses, avoiding a total stoppage of the section.

Road safety depends on signage and assisted operation

The execution of the duplication of BR-424 requires temporary changes in traffic, and these adjustments need to be accompanied by reinforced signage. During the operation of the beams, the section will have support from the Federal Highway Police and the Alagoas Traffic Police Battalion.

The services will be carried out only during the day, precisely to reduce risks in a stage that involves heavy equipment, cranes, and the movement of large structures. Even with temporary disruptions, user safety is the point that sustains the need for detours.

The project also connects to the federal package in Alagoas

The Metropolitan Arch is part of a larger set of federal investments in transportation infrastructure in Alagoas. In addition to the duplication of BR-424, the state received works such as the duplication of BR-101, revitalization of BR-316, and reconstruction of the Porto Real do Colégio fiscal post.

This context shows that the work is part of a broader attempt to reorganize road corridors and improve logistics in the state. When a highway gains capacity, the effect can spread to freight transport, tourism, daily commuting, and connection between municipalities.

New phase puts the work to the test of delivery

The installation of the beams gives visibility to the progress of the duplication of BR-424, but the effectiveness of the project will depend on the completion of the entire set: duplicated lanes, marginal roads, bridges, viaducts, and signage working in an integrated manner. Without this connection, the gain in fluidity may be limited.

The work promises to benefit more than 13,000 drivers per day and reduce the pressure of heavy traffic within Maceió, but it also imposes temporary detours and disruptions until the stages are delivered. Do you think this type of work can actually improve the routine in traffic, or does the impact only appear after many years? Leave your opinion in the comments.
