MEC Approves 26 New Higher Education Courses in 12 States and Strengthens Education Across Brazil

Expansion Of Higher Education Covers All Regions Of The Country, Focusing On Health, Technology, And Teaching Degrees

The Ministry of Education (MEC) authorized, on July 15, 2025, the creation of 26 new undergraduate courses distributed across various Brazilian cities.
Published through Ordinance No. 429 in the Official Gazette of the Union, the measure was signed by Marta Abramo, Secretary of Regulation and Supervision of Higher Education.
The decision reinforces the federal commitment to decentralizing access to quality higher education.

Courses Focus On Health, Engineering, And Technology Areas

With a total of thousands of new spots, the list released by MEC shows a strong emphasis on strategic areas such as health, engineering, and human sciences.
Therefore, the expectation is that the measure will boost the training of qualified professionals to meet local and regional demands in various fields.

Among the authorized courses, the following stand out:

Interiorization Of Higher Education Promotes Regional Development

The authorization benefits not only the large urban centers but mainly the interior of states such as Maranhão, Ceará, Goiás, Amazonas, and Rondônia.
This measure reinforces a public policy aimed at the interiorization of higher education.

For example, the municipality of Crateús/CE will receive a course in Biomedicine.
Rubiataba/GO will have new spots in Pedagogy.
In Porto Velho/RO, two courses in the health area were included: Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy, both with 240 spots each.

This distribution, according to MEC, aims to address the shortage of qualified labor in less assisted cities.
Additionally, it promotes social and economic regional development through higher education.

Institutions Must Follow Protocols To Ensure Recognition

According to Decree No. 9,235, of 2017, all institutions awarded the new courses must file requests for official recognition.
This step is mandatory for the validation of diplomas at the end of the degree.

The ordinance establishes that the authorized courses will undergo institutional evaluation, technical visits, and infrastructure analysis.
Only after this can they obtain definitive status.
These requirements ensure the quality of education and the credibility of the diplomas issued by the institutions.

The expansion of the offer of higher courses reflects, therefore, the appreciation of academic and technical education promoted by the federal government.
In addition, the initiative responds to the increasing demand from the population for quality professional training.
