Beetle Transforms into Pickup in Mexico with New Project That Adds Toyota V6 Engine and Off-Road Tires to the Classic.
The Fiat 147 may have been the pioneer in transforming a popular car into a pickup in Brazil, but now it’s the VW Beetle that is gaining new life in Mexico. Thanks to the innovative work of builders in Culiacán, the iconic Beetle, known as Vocho in Mexico, is being converted into a robust pickup equipped with a Toyota V6 engine.
The Mexican Project
The project, developed by Oscar Meza Villa and detailed on the Oscar MV channel and social media, has garnered international attention.
After the success on social media and the sale of the first unit, the Beetle pickup is now available for order.

Chile inaugurates the first electric highway for the trucks that drive its economy, installs high-power chargers over 400 km, and aims to reduce diesel dependency in a logistical shift to Puerto Montt by 2030.
This project not only preserves the essence of the Beetle, but also adds a touch of modernity and robustness.
The price to order a Beetle pickup is 350,000 Mexican pesos, which corresponds to just over R$ 107,000, depending on the exchange rate.
Each unit is customized, with a structure adapted to meet the specific preferences and needs of the customers.
How Is the Transformation of the Beetle Done?
The transformation of the VW Beetle into a pickup is a detailed process that takes four to six months to complete, depending on the style of the project.
The process involves several significant changes to the original model.
The traditional tires of the Beetle are replaced with off-road tires, and the suspension system is completely redesigned to tackle uneven terrains.
The bed of the Beetle pickup includes a spare tire, placed just below the roll bar structure.
This structure also supports a lighting set, contributing to the pickup’s aesthetics and the functionality of the vehicle.
Interior Maintenance of the Beetle
Although the exterior of the Beetle undergoes significant modifications, the interior retains many classic elements, such as the seats, trim, pedal position, steering wheel, and gear shift.
The instrument panel, located just behind the small steering wheel, is also preserved.
However, some adaptations are made to accommodate the new features of the vehicle.
The Beetle pickup may feature trailer hitches at the rear and a cable connection at the front, though the load capacity is not easily measurable.
The engine is one of the most interesting parts of the transformation. While some Beetle pickups maintain the original engine, many projects opt to use engines from modern pickups.
In one transformation, a platform and engine from a Nissan pickup were utilized. In another, a Toyota V6 engine, possibly from a fifth-generation Toyota Hilux, was installed.
This option adds a significant dose of power and performance to the Beetle pickup.
The engine position can also vary. In some cases, the powertrain has been shifted to the front of the vehicle, while in others, the engine was positioned below the bed.
These variations give the Beetle pickup a unique character, blending traditional elements with modern innovations.
A “Frankenstein” on Wheels
The result is an unusual combination of tradition and innovation. While the Beetle pickup may be seen as a “Frankenstein” on wheels, it is undeniable that it offers a unique and fun driving experience.
This project showcases the creativity and skill of Mexican builders, who managed to transform a classic from the ’60s into a modern and functional vehicle.
The combination of the Beetle with the Toyota V6 engine is a clear example of how engineering and passion for cars can lead to surprising creations.
If you are looking for a vehicle that stands out for its originality and performance, the Beetle pickup might be an interesting option to consider.
