About The Mining Company Samarco
The mining company Samarco is a privately held company operating in the mining sector, a joint venture owned by Vale and BHP, based in Belo Horizonte (MG). The company has operational units in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. The main product developed by Samarco is iron ore pellets, raw material for steel production by the steel industry. The company resumed its operations in a different way, with the introduction of new technologies and greater safety, aiming to generate lasting value for the territories where we operate.
Samarco emerged as a project in 1971, from the merger of Marcona Corporation and S/A Mineração Trindade (Samitri). While Marcona had experience in concentrating and pelletizing iron ore, Samitri held mining rights to the “Complexo Alegria” in MG, rich in itabirite with low iron content, which had never been explored in Brazil. By investing in technology, the companies transformed itabirite, previously treated as waste, into a quality product, with an iron content of about 70%.
